Frozen as Stone

When they had been kids, it had been all of them, Tenzin and his siblings, Sokka's kids, Zuko's kids... and Lin. And never for a moment had she thought that someday that could change.

As Tenzin left with the Avatar, the paperwork on Lin's desk seemed so unimportant, and so distant from her. They had been friends long before they had ever started dating, she remembered, and just because she wasn't sleeping with him anymore didn't mean she wasn't one of their own. Just because he had left her for some fresh faced university student didn't mean she didn't belong. But she had left, and that might just mean she never had belonged.

She sat at her desk and inked her brush scowling at the paperwork under her hand. She missed it, like she didn't miss Tenzin. She missed it like she missed being a child on her mother's knee. But she had left, and the way it would be was set, and her ways were set, and she wasn't going to go crawling back.

So she was trapped outside, and it was always easier to leave than to go back, and it wasn't going to change again for her.

This is a nice look at how Lin might have felt after she and Tenzin broke up.

The nice thing about writing something sad like this, at this point in canon is that we know that it will change again, and Tenzin and Lin will rekindle their frendship, if not their romance. Maybe the rest will follow.

This makes sense to me. Being single is one thing, being alone quite another. The repetition of "But she had left" heightens the emotional effect, and leaves me wondering what happened to the old group. Maybe Lin left them when she left Tenzin, and that's the regret.

Yes, that's it exactly. He left her, but she left the group, and now... Hopefully now that she's making friends with Tenzin again, she'll reach out to some of the others.

Well, uh, welcome, nice to meet you, uh... I'm really bad at this kind of thing.

Poor Lin. At least we know that it gets better after this. I like the penultimate paragraph. She's made a decision that she somewhat regrets, but is forcing herself to live with the consequences of her actions.

I see this as a tremendously hopeful drabble, because here she is resigning herself, and really soon, she's going to reconnect with Tenzin, and it looks like maybe the others.

Oh, Lin. I like your summary and the way it points to...inertia, I guess, in the physical and metaphysical senses as being a property of Earth. And Lin.

Thank you. Someone said that Lin is forcing herself to deal with the consequences of her choice. That's not quite it. It's more like she's unwilling to force herself to change the situation. Of course she tells herself it's the former.
