Language Barrier

Author's Note: well this YA fantasy novel won't get written...

Cats had only one expression, Carlos found, disdain.  He plopped the shelter tabby down on his comforter and turned his head, looking at it from every angle.  Flexing its claws, the cat padded across the green and yellow quilt squares, leaving brown, orange, and cream hairs all over them.  "Hola, como se llama usted?" it meowed.

Carlos staggered backwards as quickly as his legs would carry him.  The cat... The cat...  "No hablo Espanol," he babbled, exhausting what little Spanish he had learned from movies and kids at school.

The cat licked its paw, eying him contemplatively, "No hablo Ingles."

Seriously, this is one of the best starts to a good tale I've read in a while. From your comment, you won't be expanding it, which I find a shame. BTW, one of the many things I do for money is read slush piles and sort useful from not. I accidentally surfed onto your page and this caught my eye AND my imagination. How DO you deal with a feline familiar that doesn't even speak your language? Feel free to expand it and submit it to a magazine. You clearly have the talent.

Thank you! No, I don't intend to expand it (honestly I don't know where it would go if I tried) but I write other stories and submit them to magazines, and I'm writing a YA novel, so...
