Pelicans in the Brewery

Cat's university has a week long Thanksgiving break, so she showed up on Friday to surprise me.  She's really part of the family, my sister in all that implies, squabbling prevalent among that, so when she comes, we inflict family stories on her.

Fish: Do you remember the time Mom said she wanted to see Mikhail Gorbachev in tights?
Cat: Head spot and all?  Oh my God, my brain!
Dad: Not in the official photos.  It's airbrushed out.
Mom: I meant Mikhail Baryshnikov!

Dad really let her dig herself in back then, asking her:

Dad: Do you really mean Gorbachev?  Do you really mean Gorbachev?
Mom: Yes, yes, Gorbachev!
Dad: Don't you mean Baryshnikov?
Mom: Oh my God!

Then I mentioned the lady at the free trade store who used to have a crush on Rudolf Nureyev.

Fish: He's, as Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett would say, "gay as a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide."
Dad: How did James Burke miss that?

It should probably be noted that Dad and I bonded over Connections and The Day the Universe Changed.

Fish: With all the gay abandon of an Alcoholic in a brewery!
Cat: Pelicans in a what?

Cat has hearing problems.

When we turned on the dishwasher…

Cat: Is your dishwasher supposed to sound like Darth Vader?
Fish: Luke, I am your dishwasher.
Mom: Nooooooooooooooo!

Unfortunately, Cat can never be like the rest of the family, because we adopted her, and there are secrets she just can't know!  She did learn one the other day, though.

Dad: You have to excuse her, she's from Saturn
Fish: I'm a citizen of Earth, Dad, I was hatched here, not in Saturn; I feel so torn between!
Cat: In Saturn, not on?
Dad: It's a gas ball.  We float around in our giant round space cloud.
Cat: Your parents are aliens?
Fish: Illegal ones.
