Avatar: The Last Airbender Darkfic Comment Meme
So I just finished writing something so impossibly sweet that I swear all my teeth just rotted in my head from it. And since I have to write floranna's fic for
help_haiti (and her request is full of lovely angst) I need to get myself in a darker writing groove. To further this goal, I’m watching Criminal Minds, and I’m asking you guys to send me your darkest, most angst producing prompts for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Comment with up to five, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic. I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.
weirdlet and
floranna get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because I spawned a wild AU in
weirdlet ’s head, that she has been writing delightfully twisted installments for, and because I delayed writing
floranna’s promised fic to work on my novel.
Please no rape or sexually explicit requests. I’m a big believer that there needs to be more gen darkfic in fandom.

Despite the fact that I asked for no requests involving rape or sexually explicit requests, my brain decided to take me there all on its own in two instances. I've done my best to warn as accurately as I can in both in a way that the warnings themselves are non-triggery. I'd also like to put up a blanket warning for violence.

Oh God how I love this fandom...
Firebenders are cannibalists. Zuko centric, please, and preferably at the Western Air Temple the Gaang reacts to this. (Yes, I am a Zuko-whore. ^^ And not ashamed by it!)
Zuko is very, very morally grey. Gaang is terrified/worried about the decisions he does when he has joined them. No qualms of killing, etc. Say if this is too vague.
Zuko hurt his leg on the run and it won't heal. (something like with Severus, something a bit more permanent.) ^^
Ocean spirit dragged Zhao AND Zuko down to the bottom of ocean.
Azula's lightning strike on Zuko has something far more serious consequences on Zuko.
Ozai executed Zuko after he arrived to Fire Nation.
Zuko was never a fire-bender.
...
Well, I am predictable. And easy.
Azula's lightning strike on Zuko has something far more serious consequences
Zuko’s legs gave out twice as he made his speech, and he kept his hands behind the balcony to hide the shaking. The whole time, he could hear the physician’s words to Mai, over and over again. “His heart’s weak. We need an heir as fast as you can possibly manage.”
He could feel it fluttering within his chest.
Later, on Appa, Mai didn’t mention it, and as he lay with his head in her lap, Katara bending the water out of the clouds to try to fix everything, he hoped she didn’t know he had overheard.
~*~
The teashop walls had a few scorch marks, and places where the paint was still drying, but Uncle was standing in front, just as pleased with it as ever. Zuko leapt down, hands hidden in his Earth Kingdom robe, and ran to him. The robe flapped around him, and Uncle held his arms out-
And his legs decided to spasm right there, and he fell hard on the teashop steps.
Mai and Uncle sprinted to him at the same time to help him to his feet. “Are you alright?” his uncle demanded, throwing Zuko’s arm over his shoulder.
“I’m fine,” he said gruffly, pulling his arm back, and Mai smacked the heel of her hand gently into his forehead.
“He walked right into Azula’s lightning,” she told him, arm around Zuko’s waist, keeping him up.
“What!” he yelled, and Zuko shrugged halfheartedly.
As soon as they were inside, he moved to serve the tea, but his uncle grabbed the tray off the counter before he could reach it, and Zuko was left awkwardly letting Mai guide him to a seat.
He got his tea last, and when Uncle handed it to him, he rested a hand on Zuko’s shoulder before sitting down next to him.
It was nice to rest like this. You weren’t supposed to rest after saving the world; you were supposed to start making things work again, but it was nice.
“So what am I supposed to do?” he muttered, taking a sip of tea and glancing at his uncle. “Lean on walls or sit down all the time and hope no one notices?”
“No,” Zuko glanced at him hopefully, “There’s no way people aren’t going to notice.”
“Oh,” he looked away, wondering why he always thought his uncle was helpful again. “Thanks.”
“There is nothing wrong with everyone noticing, Nephew,” he soothed, “Scars are a mark of honor.”
“It’s not a scar, Uncle!”
“Yes it is! Some scars are just harder to identify than,” he pointed at the burn scar around his nephew’s eye, “others.”
Zuko glared.
“Scars mean you walked away from the battlefield,” Uncle murmured. “They mean you’re alive.”
No, he wanted to say, they mean you’re too stupid to block properly.

Zuko hurt his leg on the run and it won’t heal 1/?
“Well look at this, enemies and traitors all working together,” Azula sneered. Zuko gritted his teeth. “I’m done. I know when I’m beaten. You got me. A princess surrenders with honor.”
When the fire hit him in the leg, he stared at his sister in abject disbelief. He wasn’t dead. He wasn’t dead.
Then the pain hit and he almost blacked out. The smell of burned flesh made his stomach roil, and the way he had been dwelling in his memories lately, it shouldn’t have surprised him that the smell pitched him right back into them.
He heard screaming, and it took him a while to realize it was him.
His uncle’s arms were around him, and he could hear his breath in his ears, so close to a sob on every exhale.
He blinked hard against the firelight, and in front of the spots in his eyes and the tears filming across them, he could see the Water Tribe girl’s feet as she came closer. “Nononono, go away!”
“Nephew,” Uncle whispered urgently, hands bending away the fires still burning on his flesh and clothes. Zuko grabbed for his wrist and couldn’t make himself let go.
“Zuko, I can help!”
“No!” he shouted, thrashing. The movement sent a wave of agony up from the burn. Uncle hugged him tighter, one armed. Hesitantly, she moved closer, streaming the water out of her waterskin Sparks flew from his free hand, but he couldn’t aim, and he couldn’t gather them together into flame. “Leave!”
The feet stopped advancing. She backed up and stopped, backed up and stopped, and then turned, and left with the Avatar.
He panted. He thought he was going to black out.
He thought it would be a good thing if he did.
~*~
Sometimes he thought he was thirteen again. His uncle held water to his lips, and kept him warm. It was familiar.
But that wasn’t familiar.
Sometimes, he could feel his uncle scraping away putrid flesh and searing the wound, and he thought he must be dreaming, or lost in delirium again.
“Azula always lies.”
Uncle’s snore cut itself short as he was jerked out of his doze. “What was that?”
Zuko opened his eyes, glazed and fever-bright, and turned them on his uncle. “Azula always lies.”
“Almost always.” He held even more water to his nephew’s lips and swept Zuko’s hands out of the way when he tried to push it back.
~*~
The morning the fever broke, Zuko pushed himself up on his shoulder and leaned against the crumbling wall, tossing off the half-eaten blankets his uncle had found somewhere, but as soon as he tried to stand, his uncle was at his side, pushing him down again. “Rest, nephew. You have been very sick.”
“I’ve had enough resting!” he snapped back, bracing himself against the wall.
But as soon as he tried to get his leg beneath him, he found there wasn’t any leg there.
“Rest nephew, recover your strength.”
“Recover my strength?” he yelled, knocking bits of plaster loose from the wall. “What about my leg?”
Iroh shook his head.
~*~
“But I don’t feel any shame at all! I’m as proud as ever!”
“Prince Zuko, pride is not the object of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.”
Zuko looked away. “Well… my life has been nothing but humbling lately.”
Uncle glanced to the side and then back. “I have another idea. I will teach you a firebending move that even Azula doesn’t know,” he paused, eyes glittered wickedly, “because I made it up myself!”
~*~
Hours later, Zuko found himself practicing the movements and letting his energy flow.

Bonus: AU of “Sun Child”, Zura’s pregnant with Zhao’s child
“I told you not to interrupt me when I’m training!” Zura roared, lobbing a fireball to the side instead of at the prim servant her husband had assigned to her.
“My Lady.” Zura needed to stop flinching at that. So she had been demoted. So she didn’t even know her father could do that- She cut herself off. “There’s a messenger here from your husband, I put him in the garden.”
“I guess anything he has to say to me is more important than anything I possibly could be doing,” she spat bitterly.
(“Spirits, girl, it’s not like it’s your first time, stop flinching.”)
“I wouldn’t know, My Lady.” The woman looked her up and down, eyes narrowing. “Are you going to speak to him right away, or would you like a few minutes to make yourself more presentable?” Her voice dripped with disapproval.
Zura wiped the sweat out of her eyes and glanced down at the way her training clothes fell loosely around the dome of her belly. “No,” she returned the servant’s glare. “I’ll see him just the way I am.”
(“You’re an ugly thing, aren’t you? I thought I was marrying a girl, not an ostrich-horse.”)
Her footsteps pounded dully on the corridor floors, and the tropical sunlight, when she stepped into it, brushed her face like fingertips. The young man, standing stiffly in his armor clasped his hands and bowed to her. When he looked up, his face faded to even grayer than before. Behind them, the servant moved into the shadows, watching. Zura folded her arms. “My husband sent word?”
“N-no,” he stuttered, unable to take his eyes off her rounded belly.
“Then why are you here?”
“Princess, I mean, My lady...” he babbled. Her jaw clenched.
“Yes?” she prompted.
“I have word from...” he trailed off. “I’m sorry, My Lady, your husband’s dead.”
Zura went numb. “H-how?”
The soldier spoke to his feet. “In battle, at the north pole.”
“Thank you,” she mumbled.
“I know this is a terrible time for this to happen with the baby on the way and all... Not that there’s ever a good time, I mean, but...” Zura stared at him, mystified. “I’ll just go now.”
As he followed one of the servants away, Zura pivoted on her heel and marched back into the house, trying to unstick her mind.
“My Lady, where are you going?” the prim woman called after her. The words fell flat in the still, humid air.
“I’m going to see my daughter,” she snarled. “Is that okay with you?”
She pushed her way through the nursery doors when she reached them, and for a moment, her daughter’s nurse just blinked at her in shock, until Zura ran to the cradle and lifted Lan Min out. Giggling, Lan Min grabbed for her mother’s hair.
“I’m going to be watching Lan Min for the rest of the day,” she muttered, pulling her daughter close to her chest. Lan Min burbled, and her mother cooed back, her heart still hammering.
(“I thought when I married you, I’d at least get a girl who had some idea about about what she was supposed to do in bed!”)
The office stood on the other side of the house. Zura shoved the door open, writing a letter to her uncle in her mind. The walk across the office floor seemed longer than the whole rest of the house.
Kneeling down on a cushion in front of the low writing table, Zura rubbed her scalp, expecting it to be smooth like it always used to be, but there was fuzz growing up around her top-knot, and soon some of it was going to be long enough to stick into the wrappings with it.
(“If you ever disgrace me, you’ll lose a lot more than just your hair.)
Lan Min pulled herself up on the table leg and stumbled to another, and then back to her mother.
Zura spread out the paper and weighted down the edges. The inkwell unscrewed with a snick and the brush sent ripples of ink to its walls. Zura looked down at the blank sheet of paper. The brush fell from her fingers and she just stared.
Outside in the hall, Zura could hear rustling and footsteps, and her eyes snapped away from the paper. “My Lady, that’s the Admiral’s office!” the servant began explaining before the door was all the way open. “You’re not supposed to be-”
“It’s my office now!” she yelled, picking up the brush.
Lan Min started to cry.

*cough* I'm a big fan of Sokka, if you can't tell. XD
Instead of forgiving him, Yue's spirit haunts Sokka, subtly ruining his relationship with Suki and generally screwing him over.
Yue gifts Sokka with waterbending when she becomes the moon spirit. Sokka's angry and scared of himself because he doesn't trust bending and can't control it very well.
Suki's just as calmly insane as Azula is. She just hides it better.
...I could go on. And on. And on. Gen darkfic is SO under appreciated. And Criminal Minds is the best. Right after Avatar. XD
Suki’s just as calmly insane as Azula is. She just hides it better
It was Ty Lee who noticed it first. Of course it was Ty Lee. She knew the signs. Her new leader always pressed just a little too hard when she sparred, always had to win just a little too much, always waited just a little too long to let go when her warriors tapped out.
Everything had to be just a little too perfect. Everybody had to be just a little too obedient. And now she was talking about taking the Kyoshi warriors south to Sokka to help him command the Southern Water Tribe.
Maybe it was time to run away to join the circus again.
She’d run farther this time.

Zhao: Wedded and bedded (AU of Sun Child)
It didn’t matter that she wished she had killed him during the Agni Kai.
It didn’t matter that she hated him.
It didn’t matter that she wanted to scream and set him on fire when he was made an admiral on the eve of their wedding.
It didn’t matter that he had given her a choice between marrying him or being sent home to be executed for breaking her exile.
It didn’t matter that he had been so smug, so triumphant, so mock-kind, and pretended he was doing her a favor.
It didn’t matter that she was going to spend the rest of her life as a quiet little admiral’s wife, and if she was lucky a quiet little admiral’s widow.
It didn’t matter that Azulon was going to be Firelord someday.
It didn’t matter she was never going to be allowed anywhere near the capitol ever again.
It didn’t matter that no one was ever going to call Lan Min or her a princess ever again.
It didn’t matter that she had no honor.
It didn’t matter that she had failed.
What mattered was that Lan Min was safe.
What mattered was that they were going home.

Koh's eggs
Once there was Bao, who had a thousand faces, and she had shared them with Koh. She was the oldest. She was the first.
She covered the bottomless emptiness in him with face after face.
She was wonderful.
And then one night, she tried to steal the face of the first Avatar, and the woman murdered the lovely Bao. When he found her, her faces were scattered all over their lair.
Underneath each face was an egg. Their eggs. Their children.
He gathered up her scattered faces, and slowly added more to keep them company, and he tended the eggs, feeling the lives growing inside him, and the promise they held.
Until he came back one day and found Avatar Kuruk smashing them to pieces.
He no longer left his lair.
Now the broken shells and the dried yokes littered the corner of his lair, and sometimes, he curled around them, protecting what was left.
But sometimes others came into his lair.

Eric Bogle’s “And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”
Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw their faces and heard their cries, and felt the fire blasts and sword cuts of his own past bite into him again. He was lucky, and he knew it.
When their comrades could, they brought these men home, and lay them on hospital beds, and only sometimes visited. Ripped from the men whom they had fought with, trapped, and useless, and unable to leave, they turned their faces away from him when he came, but he didn’t mind.
Some went mad from it, and they needed him most. He did a general’s duty, but when he left, they were still crying and screaming.
His men were dying, and those who didn’t... He sent them home in pieces.
This war had to end soon. They couldn’t lose this war. They couldn’t.
When he heard the Avatar had returned, he could look his men in the face again.

The turtle-duck honked and tried to twist up and bite him, but he shook it. He should have snapped its neck before he tried to get away, but it was to late now.
The Fire Nation Soldiers crashed through the woods behind him, crashing and stumbling. He swore and ducked under a branch. As he ran, he tried to map his location in his head, to figure out where home was and run in the opposite direction. He glanced back-
And smashed into a tree. The turtle duck fell from his hands and bit his ankle before waddling away, right into the arms of the soldiers. One of them picked it up gingerly.
“You don’t have a lot of brains, do you kid?” the captain guffawed, shaking Jet by the scruff of his neck. “Should’ve picked some Earth Kingdom peasant.”
Jet spat in his face.
“Eugh!” the captain grimaced. “Let’s get him back. It’s time we made an example around here.”
Jet fought them the whole way back.
The Fire Nation soldiers corralled the townsfolk into the street, Fire Nation colonials along with the Earth Kingdom people and held Jet off the ground by his arms.
The captain let go.
Jet fell to his knees and one of soldiers came forward to yank his shirt over his head before the captain’s foot on the back of his neck slammed him back down. Blow after blow cracked down from the borrowed whip until his back ran slick with blood.
When the crowd had dispersed, the captain let him up and the soldiers moved back, laughing and mocking as he grabbed his shirt and stumbled away.
On his way back to the woods, wincing with each step, Jet slipped back into the barracks coup, grabbed a turtle-duck, snapped its neck, and threw it over his shoulder.
He whistled around a hastily picked stalk of grass.

Zhao helps his chances of being promoted by getting rid of his competition
What Chit Sang did to end up in the Boiling Rock
The Omashu Earth Kingdom resistance succeeds in killing Mai's family (but not her)
Why Yon Rha hates his mother so much
Zhao helps his chances of being promoted by getting rid of his competition
When the captain didn’t show up on deck that morning, the crew went about their jobs restlessly, looking over their shoulders at the captain’s cabin and the lieutenant. When she didn’t show up that afternoon, they drew lots to see who would check on her. When she didn’t answer the unlucky sailor’s knock and he found her dead body, the crew panicked.
But Lieutenant Zhao really took charge. He straightened the crew out and saw to it they completed their mission splendidly. It was so sad their captain had such a weak constitution, falling ill so suddenly like that, but it was a good thing her lieutenant was so prepared.
And that was what the other officers’ reports were going to say. Zhao made sure the rest of the white jade plant was at the bottom of the ocean as soon as he left her cabin, and almost no one had even heard of the stuff anymore.

What Chit Sang did to end up in the Boiling Rock
“Didn’t your mother over teach you you’re only supposed to borrow money if you can pay it back?” The bone snapped, and the man screamed. Chit Seng let him go and he stumbled back, tripping over his own feet, into the wall.
Chit Seng turned his palm up and bent fire into it. The man’s eyes widened and his pupils contracted against the light. “I swear, I’ll pay you, don’t kill me!”
The fire blasted between the man’s feet. “Dead men don’t make good on their debts. I’m just taking a little...” he snatched the arm of the little boy cowering against the wall next to his father. “Collateral.”
Most loan spider-sharks had muscle to collect the money for them. Chit Seng preferred to give his costumers a more personal touch.

Zhao destroying part of Wan Shi Tong’s library
Fire sprang from the man’s hands and ripped through the scrolls. The smell of smoke and burning ink filled the air as he walked away, the bonfire behind him crackling merrily.
Wan Shi Tong bowed to him as he left and he closed the library doors behind him with a sinister smile, safe amongst the desert sands.
Hours later, one of the knowledge seekers came to his master, yipping and sobbing, to show him the way to the calamity.
Wan Shi Tong flung himself into the blaze with a scream. His wings beating aside bits of blackened paper, he clawed through the heap of scrolls, desperate for something, anything to save.
But there was nothing.
He watched the fire burn itself down, calling out a lament over the charred remains of the world’s knowledge on the Fire Nation. There was nothing left. He could feel the knowledge leave his mind as it burned.
One of his knowledge seekers whimpered, and he felt the same way. He looked down. The creature’s fur was black with soot, but in its mouth, it carried the remnants of a scroll. Wan Shi Tong wept when he saw the prize, and cradled it gently against his feathered chest to lock it away under glass, where no one could hurt it again.

The Omashu Earth Kingdom resistance succeeds in killing Mai’s family (but not her)
She stared at the letter so long her eyes stopped seeing it.
Messenger ships crossed paths with Azula’s ship from time to time, but Mai never paid attention to them. If it was important, Azula wouldn’t let her see it anyway. She never sent letters to her family. She never opened the ones her family sent her.
Now she was reading that her family was dead, that a bunch of Earth Kingdom rebel bandits had...
The Earth Kingdom had fallen to Azula.
Her family had fallen to the Earth Kingdom.
She was going home, finally.
Home would be empty when she got there.
The words in the message were measured and precise. She was glad they were. She was.
There were few places on the ship where she could be alone, and cry and scream where no one could hear her, but she knew every one. Azula would never intrude on her misery.
But Zuko didn’t give her the same courtesy. She didn’t know if the was glad of it or not.
She didn’t know if she was supposed to be.

Let's see... let's see...
Why exactly do those turtle-ducks fear Azula so much?
Lao Bei Fong will do anything to keep his daughter safe, even from herself.
Zuko - Directly after the Agni Kai
Sokka - In canon, Smellerbee and Pipsqueak were really going to kill him at that 'long walk'. What would have happened to Katara and Aang if they succeeded?
(This may not be a dark!fic prompt, but I thought I would try anyway.) Sokka is supposed to be the next chief of the SWT. Suki can't give up her position of leader as a Kyoshi Warrior, and one day it will come to a head.
Why exactly the turtle-ducks fear Azula so much
Azula was a wonderful princess.
It wasn’t hard to be better than Zuzu, but even without her brother around to make her look better, she was something truly spectacular.
She was so dutiful that here she was practicing firebending even with her teacher sick and no one around to make her.
She was so talented that she could already bend lightning.
The energies separated-
And she shot it straight into the turtle-duck pond.
She smiled.

Lao Bei Fong will do anything to keep his daughter safe, even from herself
He laid the chest on the table and opened it to display the gold inside.
She didn’t get it. It wasn’t her fault she wanted freedom; anyone would if they didn’t know... He kept telling her how fragile she was. It didn’t matter how good she was. If fire hit her, she’d burn. She’d die. He wasn’t going to lose her because a bunch of kids thought they could save the world. They couldn’t. She didn’t understand. If he could just make her understand-
His baby girl just didn’t know how dangerous the world really was; how could she when he had kept her from it?
“The Avatar has kidnapped my daughter.” It was a polite fiction. He could see the disbelief on their faces, just behind the greed. He was paying them. They wouldn’t hurt her if he was the one paying them. “I want you to do whatever it takes to bring her home.”
Toph was going to hate him.
It didn’t matter. At least she’d be alive.

Zuko: Directly after the Agni Kai
Ozai visited. Iroh wished he hadn’t.
That man’s son tossed and turned on the bed, and somewhere through the haze of pain and herbs to make him sleep, Iroh hoped he felt the sheet being pulled up around him, something, anything. Zuko shivered. “Mom?”
“No, Prince Zuko.” Iroh bathed his forehead with cool water, careful not to drip any on the bandage.
“Your mother’s gone,” Ozai snapped.
Whimpering, Zuko turned towards his father’s voice and curled in on himself. Iroh wanted to set his brother on fire. “Do you have to be here?”
“I came to inform my son of his sentence.” His face didn’t move when he spoke.
“Are you out of your mind?”
“Careful, General Iroh.” Brushing what little hair his nephew had left out of his eyes, Iroh glared at his brother, but the glare wore itself away, until the expression left was just tired. “He is banished, until he can find and capture the Avatar.”
Iroh sighed and swallowed the fire that wanted to come out with that sigh. “I need to go pack.”
“What are you talking about?” Ozai narrowed his eyes.
“I am going with him.”
“Are you.”
“Someone should!” Zuko whimpered a little and thrashed, and Iroh did his best to soothe his nephew. “We’ll take my ship.”
“You are not permitted to deprive the Fire Nation navy of the services of that ship!” Ozai raged, advancing on his brother and the bed.
“Then how do you expect him to search for the Avatar?” he demanded, leaping to his feet.
“I’m not unreasonable,” his brother sneered. “I’ve already provided a ship and crew.”
“C-cold,” Zuko shuddered, burying ineffectively into the blankets. Iroh bowed his head.
Ozai smiled and Iroh could see his brother’s thoughts on his face and decided he was a fool. “Yes. You may accompany Zuko. He could use someone to teach him acquiescence.”
“I’m honored.” Iroh waited until his brother turned his back to answer with his own joyless smile.
By the time his nephew could tell the difference, they were already on the ship.

1) We are the hollow men. (http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/784/)
2) The avatar spirit becomes human to learn compassion, what does this mean about all the other spirits?
3) Inspired by one of your other drabbles. Ty Lee is an Airbender, now make it dark.
4) At the North Pole, some goes wrong with Koizilla, and Aang isn't able to defuse. And thus did the Fire Nation sink beneath the waves.
5) The world grumbles that Aang is to forgiving, to pacifistic. They are fools, imagine if her wasn't forgiving. The Fire Nation may be the first, it would not be the last.
