attackfish: Yshre girl wearing a kippah, text "Attackfish" (Jet Juko TDL quote)
[personal profile] attackfish
So I just finished writing something so impossibly sweet that I swear all my teeth just rotted in my head from it.  And since I have to write floranna's fic for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti  (and her request is full of lovely angst) I need to get myself in a darker writing groove.  To further this goal, I’m watching Criminal Minds, and I’m asking you guys to send me your darkest, most angst producing prompts for Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Comment with up to five, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because I spawned a wild AU in [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet ’s head, that she has been writing delightfully twisted installments for, and because I delayed writing [livejournal.com profile] floranna’s promised fic to work on my novel.

Please no rape or sexually explicit requests.  I’m a big believer that there needs to be more gen darkfic in fandom.

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] avocado_love .

Meme Closed and Finished

Despite the fact that I asked for no requests involving rape or sexually explicit requests, my brain decided to take me there all on its own in two instances.  I've done my best to warn as accurately as I can in both in a way that the warnings themselves are non-triggery.  I'd also like to put up a blanket warning for violence.

Jet decides NOT to gather proof that Mushi and Lee are firebenders before he acts

From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
They slipped into the Ba Sing Se, unnoticed by everyone, and spent the last of their money on a crutch, a week’s rent in the worst part of town, and a stupid vase full of stupid orange flowers. Zuko hobbled at his uncle’s side, who slowed down to keep pace with him, and wanted to sink into the street. He didn’t question how Uncle had found them both a job so quickly with all the refugees pouring into the city, or what he was supposed to do with only one and two thirds legs. At least his uncle had let him take off the makeshift bandage and pin his pant leg up.

The streets teemed with people, animals, and dust in the middle of the day. Zuko heaved a sigh of relief as they ducked into a gloomy little teashop, but then the owner marched over to them with a pair of folded aprons in his hands. “You must be Mushi’s neph- You didn’t tell me he only had one leg!”

“Yes, but he’s a fine tea maker.” He clapped Zuko on the shoulder. “You don’t have to stand up to do that!” Zuko wanted to know if his uncle knew just how obvious he sounded when he was lying. The teashop owner shifted his eyes to Uncle, dubiously, but Iroh just smiled. “He has a gift.”

Zuko wanted to sink into the floor again, but instead, he just snatched the apron out of his hands and yanked it over his head.

"You must forgive my nephew,” Iroh smiled smarmily. “It’s a recent injury. He’s still a little bitter.” Zuko shot him a poisonous stare. “Uh, Does this possibly come in a larger size?”

“I have extra string in the back.” The teashop owner poured two cups of tea and handed them to his new employees. “Have some tea while you wait.”

As soon as the man had bustled away, Iroh took an experimental sip. “Eeow!” his face twisted, and his eyes bulged with horror. “This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!”

Zuko rolled his eyes. “Uncle, that’s what all tea is.”

“How can a member of my own family say something so horrible?” Uncle grabbed the teapot and sent the tea flying out the open window mournfully. “At least you can’t do any worse!”

Zuko glared. “Uncle, have you gone insane?”

“Well you have to make the tea,” his uncle patted him on the shoulder. “You can’t serve it.”

Zuko’s glare deepened, and Uncle just steered him into the kitchen, and for the next several hours, went over and over the baby steps of tea making as Zuko sulked through each attempt and quickly hid his smile when he finally got it right.

You know why I really want to see Zuko's leg hurt? Because I want him to hit some idiot's head with it. ^^ It's my fantasy.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
*snerk* not going to happen here. His fantasy is to save enough to get a peg leg. Mind, he does get to seriously surprise some people later on, so I hope I satisfy some of that craving.

I just wrote a scene in a novel I'm nowhere near ready to start writing, because it's an Urban Fantasy where the main character has my illness, and he gets to whack a villainous henchman on the head with an empty oxygen tank, shouting "You're going to shoot at a car full of oxygen tanks, are you PSYCHO?" It's his one real moment of physical kicking ass. So I know the feeling.
From: [identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com
Yup, the two times I had to use the cane I had to physically control mytself that I wouldn't whack annoying people with it. Mainly my littlesister and littlebrother.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
I keep reciting to myself "the oxygen concentrator is expensive, the oxygen concentrator is expensive, if you whack someone with it, it will break, and you can't afford a new one." Makes me miss the tanks. When I had them, I just kept reminding myself of the legal consequences.

“Maybe the Earth King overslept.”

Zuko glanced at his uncle incredulous but he didn’t have time to say anything before the Dai Li entered and ringed the two of them. “Something’s not right.”

Behind the Dai Li, a shorter figure, all in green entered the room and then walked between the agents... and smiled. “It’s tea time.”

Zuko grabbed for his crutch and shot to his foot. “Azula!”

“Have you met the Dai Li? They’re Earthbenders, but they have a killer instinct that is so-” she stopped, actually looking at her brother, and stared at the crutch.

Uncle stood and picked up his teacup. “Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname the ‘Dragon of the West’?”

Azula examined her nails. “I’m interested in a lengthy anecdote, Uncle.”

“It’s more of a demonstration really.” Uncle downed the tea, and Zuko met his eyes before springing on his good foot to duck behind him.

Fire poured out of Uncle’s mouth, and the two of them fled.

The chamber wall ripped open when the fire blast hit it. Zuko scrambled through the freshly made exit, free hand raised, and limped, still clumsy and new at it, down the hall beyond. Still breathing fire at the Dai Li, Uncle ran backwards past him, fingertips crackling with lightning. Behind them, two Dai Li agents shot finger shaped-rocks from their hands, driving them deep into the plaster walls, throwing dust everywhere.

Uncle's fingers pointed, and lightning arced straight through an outside wall, smashing it to pieces. With sharp shout, he dove out the hole, and straight into a topiary. “Come on. You’ll be fine.”

The crutch slid in the dust. Zuko fell hard on his hands and knee. Above his head, finger stones kept slamming into the wall, no longer right behind him, but right over head. He could hear them whistling past his ears.

Then they just stopped. He rammed his crutch into the floor and pushed up. “Zuko!” came Uncle’s voice from below. He turned to follow, hearing the Dai Li shift behind him. A stone hand rocketed towards his foot, and he knocked it out of the air. The agent pulled his hand back, and the rocks soared back to his hand.

“You’re so dramatic.” Azula stepped up to stand between the Dai Li. “What, are you going to do, challenge me to an Agni Kai?”

Zuko forgot about following Uncle. “Yes! I challenge you!”
Azula smiled cheerily. “No thanks!”

Stuffing the crutch into his side and pinning it in place with his elbow, he raised both hands, a ball of fire blazing between them. A snarl burst out of him as he threw his whole weight behind sending it at Azula, but she just watched, smiling.

A pair of agents flanked her and slipped forward between her and her brother. A massive panel of the stone floor leapt up to take the blow. Before it fell back into place, before he had time to react, they flung their rock gloves. One grabbed his foot and pinned it to the floor, the other the other ripping his crutch out of his grasp and into the remnants of the wall behind him. His arms pinwheeled. He fell backwards, and he could feel the bones in his foot bending and pulling apart, and he hissed at the pain... And then his foot couldn’t bend anymore, even if it broke, and he fell forward instead, knocking the wind out of him. His shoulder throbbed where it had slammed into the floor. When the the last rock hands came to trap his hands, all he could do was close his eyes in resignation before they reached him. Azula didn’t even smirk as she turned away. If anything, she seemed... put out.

The two Dai Li agents filed away behind her, but two more stepped up, with fresh rock gloves. Zuko waited. They stalked closer, and Zuko kept waiting. He pulled air deep into his chest and lay there with his head twisted to the side, breathing, until at last they came close enough.

The air burst out of his throat as fire. The agent in its path hopped back, but it caught on the hem of his robe, flaring brightly as it got real fuel. “Damn!” But then Zuko saw his sandal and stockings burning too. The rock glove came down tight over his mouth. “Did you see that?”

“Of course I saw it.”

“Little shit firebent at me!”

“I saw!”

The first agent hissed as he put his foot down again. “Spirits damn!” but they both grabbed hold of his arms and dragged him down the hall.
From: [identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com
Okay, at which point Zuko's leg is amputated? From above knee or below? And how did you plan the Jet confrontation or did it even happen?

Of course he firebent at you, moron...

And why is Azula so...odd?

Hee! And this is so great!
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Just below the knee. Azula's fire blast hit him in the shin. Jet didn't take interest in the two of them because of Zuko's injury, so he never saw Iroh heat his tea.

*snerk* most people stop fighting when they know they've lost. Zuko, not so much.

The leg surprised Azula. She didn't expect it to have gotten infected and for Zuko to have lost it, and Zuko is NOT ALLOWED TO SURPRISE AZULA, even by accident. It didn't enter her plans, and now in a rare miscalculation, she has decided he's useless as a temporary ally. Oh crap, I just spoiled.

Thank you! It's a lot of fun, even if it is turning into a bit of a monster.
From: [identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com
Well, I myself are kinda torn should I wish you be writing on this or the help_haiti fic. ^^

I hope someone would be really asshole and anti-people with disabiilities so Zuko could explode and give them an ass-kicking.

And that spoiler makes me all smiley. ^^
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
LOL,this monster's already more than 2000 words written, and as soon as I finish, I'm writing the help_haiti fic before I start any more of these miserably addictive things. There will sadly not be that kind of smackdown in this fic, (though I promise a smackdown!) but Jet's going to learn just how tough a blind kid can be in a fight, and for that matter, just how tough an Iroh can be for the sake of his Zuko in the help_haiti fic. Yeah, part of the reason there's no Jet here is because the help_haiti fic is dedicated to Jet and Zuko gen.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
By the way, if you want to shoot me some prompts with babies in them I'll see what I can do. They'll wait until after I'm done with the help_haiti fic (can't keep putting it off) but I'll get to them as soon as I'm done.
From: [identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com
*shrieks* Thankyouthankyou!!

This is bloody cool that ah...And now thinking the prompts. Humm.

Long Feng/Zuko. Zuko is still Zuko, so no mindbending. Threaths about it, fine, but he shouldn't be Li.And mpreg, of course.

Lt. Jee/Zuko. Mpreg again. ^^ The baffledness anbd Iroh reacting.

And you can change Zuko into a girl if you feel like it.

So, how many should I give? ^^'
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
As many as you want, but I only promise one (yeah yeah, sure, there'll be more)

Zuko lost track of the twists and turns they took through the palace and gave up entirely when the agents carrying him sank a shaft into the ground.

As they bent, he sagged in their arms, and one of the agents snorted. “Worr-” His leg shot up in an arch, trailing fire behind it, and he hung in their arms, letting them support him. The flames caught on the talkative Dai Li agent’s sleeve. “Aaargh!” He leapt back, his helmet flying off his head, but before Zuko could break away completely, the other agent had grabbed both arms. Zuko kicked his knee out with a fire blast.

And fell to the ground with a groan. The smell of smoke and burning fabric filled the air, and Zuko twisted against the rock bonds, huffing around his gag in frustration, but no matter how hard he squirmed, he couldn’t move forward at all.

Behind him, one of the agents seized his foot and bent it back against his thigh. Zuko kicked, but the agent was stronger, and held the foot in place as he bent stone around it, pinning it securely. He roared, thrashing ineffectively against the ground, and he could see the other agent coming closer, and he could see where the fire from Zuko’s kick had burned away the man’s robes, but it hadn’t touched the damn skin at all. As the agents slipped their arms through his again and held him up, they shook him hard. “Spirits, kid,” the first agent said, sporting shallow, shiny burns on his bare foot and wrist. “Where’d you think you were going to go, anyway?”

“Just hurry up,” the other one grimaced. Zuko heaved. All of his weight rested on his shoulders and twisted arms. “So we can get rid of him.

The tunnel slammed closed above them, and Zuko convulsed, almost ripping his arms out of their sockets trying to get away.

“You want us to knock you out?” one of them asked, resting his rock gloved hand on Zuko’s head. “Will that be easier, you think?” Zuko stopped struggling. “Good boy.”

The tunnel wound lower and lower through the rock, and when they emerged into the underground chamber, Zuko almost started crying with relief at being able to see again. When one of the agents let go and walked in front of him, he threw himself sideways to escape, but the other one grabbed his other arm. “Just give up, kid, there’s nowhere to go anyway.”

The man carried him forward in his arms like a baby to a new hole bent into the ground.

“You’ve got company.” The tunnel sealed behind him and the rocks flew off his body and back to the Dai Li as he tumbled down the tunnel, bouncing off stones as he went.

But true to the Dai li’s words, he wasn’t alone.
From: [identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com
He is really pushing Dai Li's patience right now. And I just love it when they caal him a kid. And next will be Katara. ^^

A prompt again: In Weirdlet's Au, and AU of it. Zura married Zhao and now she is pregnant. Again.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Oh God, is he ever! Tenacious little bastard, isn't he? *pet's him* And he needs to be called kid more often.

I'm dithering about doing the scene with Katara, actually, because it wouldn't be that much different from canon, but then I completely set myself up to write it... oops.

Scroll down to my replies to weirdlet's prompts. I did everything but the pregnant part. If you want a continuation of that with Zhao/Zura spawn, I'm happy to oblige.
From: [identity profile] weirdlet.livejournal.com
(*shakes fist* darnitIhavethatideainmyhead!)

I always do it as 'Zura was married to Zhao in the middle of her first pregnancy, though, which means most of the actual series involving her didn't happen and I never can figure out what I want happening in the background as a result, whilst Zura's eight months gone and calling out her husband publicly for trying to get her daughter shipped off to boarding school.

"Try it, buddy, and I will make things hard for you."
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Lol, I'm horrible. I have him capturing her at the Fire Temple. Currently, she's just barely pregnant when the messenger comes to tell her that Zhao died. She has a hard time holding in her unwidowlike cheering.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Solution: make the Zuko and Katara interaction different. Duh. I just realized that a lot of what I've written from here on out looks like the set up for Zutara, which isn't what I meant to do. It's just supposed to be touching gen. Oops again.

~*~

“Zuko!” The landing knocked the wind out of Zuko’s lungs, his missing leg curled up under him, and by the time he scrambled to his knees, the Water Tribe girl’s expression had shifted from shock to scorn. “Why did they throw you in here? Oh wait. Let me guess. It’s a trap. So when Aang shows up to rescue me, you can finally have him in your little Fire Nation clutches.” Her hands twisted into mocking claws, and Zuko refused to look at her. “You’re a terrible person, you know that? Always following us, hunting the Avatar, trying to capture the world’s last hope for peace! But what do you care? You’re the Fire Lord’s son. Spreading war and violence and hatred is in your blood.”

Zuko twisted around to face her, good leg drawing protectively around the stump of the other. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The Water Tribe girl drew herself up, lips tight with fury. “I don’t? How dare you! You have no idea what this war has put me through. Me personally!”

“Oh yeah?” That was it! He uncurled hands clenched, and slipped collapsing back down when he tried to shoot to his foot. “You think you’re the only one? You think nothing bad has ever happened to me?”

She gasped and stared at his stump. A snarl spread over his face as he fought to keep himself from cringing back. But she shook herself, rubbing her pendant with her thumb. “You lost your leg; I lost my mother!”

His glower softened, but he curled back in on himself. “So did I.”

She rose from where she had let herself fall, across the cave from him. There were tears threatening to fall from her eyes when he turned back to her. “What, do they send Fire Ladies to war too? I bet she died finding out some helpless little Earth Kingdom village wasn’t so helpless.” her satisfied smirk looked pasted on.

His teeth clenched. “No.”

She stopped, but she rallied, shifting unconsciously into a bending stance. Distantly, he felt flattered. “I can’t believe you were lying in wait for us in Ba Sing Se!” she spat. “Don’t you ever stop?”

“We were hiding, alright?” he roared. “It had nothing to do with you!”

“Oh.” She looked down, shamefaced.

“Just shut up and leave me alone.” His own shame gathered in his stomach. He had given up.

“I didn’t know,” she tried, but he just folded his arms and turned his back to her. “I’m sorry I insulted your mother.” He shot her a dark look.

The silence stretched between them until Zuko worried that when it broke, it would snap back and hit them both. “What’s your name, anyway?”

“Katara,” she answered crouching down next to him. “I’m sorry I yelled at you before.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It’s just that for so long now, whenever I would imagine the face of the enemy, it was your face.” She moved around him until she was facing him.

“My face.” Zuko put a hand to his scar. “I see.”

She grimaced, frustrated. “No, no, that’s not what I meant.”

“It’s okay. I used to think this scar marked me, the mark of the banished prince and I’d never be allowed to forget it, but now,” he glanced at his leg. “I barely notice it.”

Katara followed his gaze. “I wish I could fix it, but I can’t heal something that isn’t there anymore.”

“You have healing abilities?” He looked at her, feeling a little sick.

“I told you I could help,” she smiled wanly. “What happened? I mean I saw her burn you, but...”

“It got infected,” Zuko spoke to the floor. “Uncle had to cut it off.”

“I’m sorr-”

The walls rumbled, and she fell onto him, knocking them both to the floor. Rocks and crystals flew away from the wall, and Zuko and Katara stared, frozen. When the dust settled, the Avatar stood amidst the rubble, Uncle close behind.

“Aang!” Katara levered herself to her feet and ran to the Avatar, pulling him into a tight embrace right before Uncle hauled Zuko to his foot and into a hug.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Around Katara’s shoulder, the Avatar glared at him, and Zuko’s own good eye narrowed in response, but Katara didn’t notice, hugging the Avatar closer. “Aang, I knew you would come.”

“Uncle, I don’t understand.” Zuko jabbed his finger at the boy, voice hard. “What are you doing with the Avatar?”

“Saving you, that’s what,” the Avatar (Aang, a part of him reminded himself) shot back. Zuko lunged for him, forgetting again for a moment, and only Uncle’s arm kept him from falling.

“Zuko, it’s time we talked.” Uncle steadied him and turned to the others. “Go help your other friends. We’ll catch up with you.”

Before he darted back up the tunnel he had just made into the cave, the Avatar (Aang, Zuko reminded himself again) bowed to Uncle. Pausing, Katara turned at the tunnel entrance and glanced one last time at the two of them, then she too left them alone.

When he spoke again, Zuko’s voice was very soft. “Why Uncle?” he asked, forlorn.

“You are not the man you used to be, Zuko.” Uncle held him close, but Zuko broke away to lean against the wall. “You are stronger and wiser and freer than you have ever been, and now you have come to the crossroads of your destiny. It’s time for you to choose. It’s time for you to choose good!”

Closing his eyes, Zuko bowed his head. That was the first time his uncle had ever put it that-

Suddenly, the ground lurched and pitched him to his knees. A line of the glowing, green crystals erupted out of the stone, reaching for Uncle. They surged up around him, locking him in place. Scrambling back up, Zuko rested his weight on the crystals, arms in front of him, ready to bend fire.

Azula slid gracefully down the original tunnel, two Dai Li agents close on her heels, but Zuko barely even noticed the agents. His sister was the important one. She strode forward to face him, smirking.

When Zuko noticed out of the corner of his eye that one of the agents’ robes were burned all around the knees, his fire blast had hit, he had to restrain a smirk of his own.

“Going to fight me Zuzu?” Azula clicked her tongue.

“Release him immediately!” Zuko roared, keeping his hands out in front of him.

“Why?” Zuko snarled, and Azula’s eyes narrowed in pleasure at his response. “What could you possibly do that would convince me to let him go?”

With a shout, he heaved a ball of fire at her head, but she just flicked it aside. “Why did you come down here?”

She opened her eyes wide and softened her face the way she used to when they were kids and she wanted everyone to think she was sweet. “What, you don’t believe I just wanted to see you one last time before they locked you away for good?” Zuko let out a wordless howl of rage. “Where’s the girl, Zuko?”

“You’re too late, Azula,” their uncle cut in. “The Avatar came and got her already.”

Azula snarled, eyes narrowing at the hole in the cave wall. “You don’t look like you’ve been fighting.” Her eyes roamed the cave, taking in the intact crystals and the walls, undisturbed except for the new exit. “You haven’t become a traitor, have you, Zuzu?”

Zuko growled deep in his throat.

“I’ll deal with you two later,” she spat menacingly, signaling the Dai Li to leave and sprinting to the tunnel the Avatar had created. For once, Zuko could see her fighting to stay calm.

“Should we secure the prince too, your highness?” the agent who had helped carry him down there asked tentatively at the bottom of the shaft.

“No,” Azula glanced back at her brother. What’s the point? There’s nothing he can do.”
