Kindle the Wind (The Avatar! Zuko 'verse) commentfic meme

That's it, folks, I can't take it.  In the hopes that maybe writing some of what I want to write will get me unblocked on the fic I'm trying to write, I'm giving in and running a commentfic meme for my Avatar!Zuko verse.  Comment with up to five requests, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet , [livejournal.com profile] fanficforensics, [livejournal.com profile] beboots, and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because [livejournal.com profile] beboots  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  are the best betas ever, and [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet and [livejournal.com profile] fanficforensics just because.

Also, the 'verse has a title now, Kindle the Wind!

Air, Water, Earth, Fire.

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished.

A hundred years passed and the new Avatar crashed into the ice sheet that borders our village. Although he is the Fire Nation prince, and it's his family and his nation that have brought this war to the world, I have hope that inside Zuko lies the spark of greatness. In the end, he has to save the world.

Korra as the waterbending sifu to Zuko's successor

[identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Featuring miraculously not a cloudgrandbaby Jinora.

~*~

"Come on, kid, you got to flow your way through the stances." She grabbed Jinora's arms and pulled her through the move like a marionette.

"You sure you're not an earthbender?" Jinora asked shakily. The woman had arms like pylons. No one that old had any business being anything other than wizened and frail.

Her new sifu melted the ice between them and hurled it at Jinora. Yelping, she jumped out of the way, sliding on the ice. Korra tossed her head, grinning widely. "That answer your question."

"I can do that too," Jinora said seriously. "And I'm an earthbender."

Sifu Korra chuckled. "Kid, I've talked to your earthbending teacher. You are not an earthbender."

Jinora thought maybe this would be a good time to die. Maybe if she asked nicely Sifu Korra would teach her how to sink herself into the ice. "Can I try that water whip again?"

"Go right ahead," Sifu Korra smirked. "I'm not stopping you."

Jinora lifted up the water that was trying to freeze back into the floor of the training ground and flung it at at Korra hard, lashing her arm, but when she tried to pull the water back, it splashed at her feet.

Sifu Korra rubbed her arm. "You. Stances. Flow."

Jinora rolled her eyes. "You know, your movements aren't very flowing either."

"Yeah, well, that's because I'm boss," She folded her arms. "And maybe someday, if you ever get to be as boss as me, you can move like a creaky old woman too."

There is no Avatar Korra in this verse, I'm sad to say. There is Avatar Jinora and scary-beyond-all-reason-waterbending-sifu Korra, however. http://attackfish.livejournal.com/99880.html?thread=1111848#t1111848 If you want to amend that request, you can.

2. meeting with Jet
3. The joys of new bending.

And I'll give the rest a bit later. ^^

Yay! Trying to think of a title.

1. Zuko tells Uncle
2. Agni Kai against Zhao
3. Does Roku tell Zuko about the comet?
4. What happens when one accidentally airbends while playing the tsungi horn
5. Avatar Zuko emprisoned at Pohuai Stronghold
6. Gran-Gran criticizing Uncle's parenting skills
7. How does Zuko's crew react when they find out their commander is the nation's number one enemy, pretty much?

[identity profile] luunyscarlet.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
1. Zuko learning waterbending
2. Meeting Toph
3. Azula having to be nice to her Avatar brother.
4. How did Zuko's heel-face turn happen here?

I'll think about no 5 later.

[identity profile] wolfs-lament.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Couple of questions (if I'm allowed):

Out of curiosity, Zuko doesn't seem to be learning the elements in order. Is it reversed, or is he learning them out of order through a lack of available teachers? Also, do people outside of the crew, Ozai, etc. know they have a Fire Nation Avatar?

1. Zuko fails at polite requests. Fortunately, Katara cares more about finding a waterbending master.

2. Sokka figures out Zuko is a master of dual swords.

3. The Winter Solstice: how does Zuko deal with spirit monsters?

4. Assuming Zhao is given orders to escort the Avatar home: how does he handle it?

5. Azula's reaction when she finds out her brother is the Avatar.

The first time Zuko struck a Fire Nation solider in anger

[identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are not listening to me, Prince Zuko." The officer towered over him, looming like a wrathful spirit, and Zuko forced himself not to flinch down.

"I'm trying!" he yelled. He took his stance again, glaring at his teacher's stupid face. Something flashed in the man's eyes. "I'll do it again."

"What is the point?" the man sneered. "You're just going to fail again, and I will be left to explain to the Firelord why the second prince's son is a weakling and a failure."

He felt his legs step forward, and his hand thrust out at the man, the fire bursting forth into the air, and to Zuko, it felt cold, colder than the helpless rage that had fueled it.

The hand slammed into his wrist, and the man's fingers closed and tightened. He remembered what his father had said about this man when he had brought him to Zuko, how this was a master firebender, and a great veteran of the war, and Zuko should be grateful that the Firelord had pulled him away from the front lines to teach a talentless brat like him. But he wasn't grateful. he wasn't. The skin of the man's forearm was angry red, like a new sunburn, because his teacher might have been fast enough to dodge, but he wasn't fast enough to escape unscathed. Good, Zuko thought. he was glad.

His teacher Zuko's wrist in, changing its angle across his young student's body. He nudged at his legs to adjust his stance. And his hand tightened further around Zuko's wrist until it hurt. "Hold onto that anger, my prince. That is what you will need."

"Yes, Master Jeong Jeong," Zuko almost spat.

"Drill it again."

Zuko pulled his leg back and started again, and later, after he had burned away all of the fire, Zuko saw his teacher's face in his mind, and the fear that had flickered across it as he had called Zuko worthless, and he wondered at it, trying to figure out why he had looked so relieved when Zuko had almost burned him.

Hmm... does JJ know who Zuko really is?

[identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but he knows that if he can't get Zuko up at least to his sister's level, Ozai will make his life something other than worth living.

*Q&A*

[identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Zuko skipped over learning airbending for a while because they didn't know there were any surviving airbenders. There's more to it, but I'm hoping somebody will ask.

As to who knows, this will be answered soon in prompt responses.

1) Korra decided to teach her student one of the most important life lesson, the magic of drinking.
2) Toph wants a life changing field trip with the Avatar, and darn it, she's going to get one.
3) Zuko and the ocean spirit.
4) Azula finally clues in that Ty Lee is an airbender.
5) The final battle. Father and son meet under a blood red sky.

Yes, Korra is definitely the boss here ;)! I gather Zuko lived much longer than Aang did in this verse. I wonder whether airbending is part of probending now, since there are probably a lot more airbenders in this verse compared to canon. Am now seeing Sifu Korra taking Avatar Jinora to a probending competition.

Re: Korra as the waterbending sifu to Zuko's successor

[identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, Zuko did, which also means he went up against Amon. Unfortunately, there are only a few hundred airbenders in the world, so they are not part of probending teams, but many referees have put together a theoretical rulebook for them in the hopes that someday... Sifu Korra is herself a legend of probending from the early days, and her student is going to learn to appreciate it, damn it.

This teaching style will get passed on again and again and get progressively more hideous through the generations, until one day it will consist of the teacher dropping her student head first into a volcano and telling her to save herself. With waterbending.
