It's more of a problem, I would think, for people with hearing imparements rather than people who are completely deaf. It doesn't help that one of the best known hearing impared historical figures, Juliette Gordon Low, founder of American Girl Scouts, was famous for playing up her imparement when people said things she didn't like, though when you're a woman in the early 20th century upsetting the established social order, you use what tools you have. My sister had a couple of teachers insist she didn't have trouble hearing, she just wasn't paying attention, and told her she was stupid and lazy, so... A lot of people are under the misaprehention that people with disabilities get special privledges. It's weird.
