I haven't read Hardinge in ages, so I'm catching up some of her books I missed. I started with this one, and really enjoyed it! Although it's not specifically similar to it, I was reminded of Fly By Night in its general vibe - not as dark as some of her books (... I say this about a book in which

slight spoiler

one protagonist's brother ate her sister and that's not even the worst trauma of her life),

with entertainingly unhinged worldbuilding including a kingdom partly ruled by spiders, and kid protagonists caught up in adult politics in which they're not sure which of the various morally gray adults around them they can trust.

The top of this week was taken up with preparations for travel to a different city with the family. We used to live there and my husband has family living there, so he took kiddo to visit his dad and sister while my dad and I took care of business. The business part went well, husband and kiddo had fun on their family visit, and we traveled back without incident. The upshot should be that we can worry significantly less about money starting in November, especially if I can get some work to tide us over.

I had a slight misadventure on the way when I thought I might miss the train out and had it canceled in advance, giving my apologies to Dad. Unexpectedly I ended up arriving at the station a little earlier and ran up to grab a standing ticket last minute to make the trip after all. That was a bit of a surprise for Dad when I called him from the same train he was on lol. I'm still so bad about time, a trait that has not endeared me to employers over the years who have had to deal with me.

We had scheduled the trip on Wednesday because Friday was Independence Day and there were no train tickets to be gotten on Thursday, the day before the start of the long weekend. After the trip we rested and slid into the holiday weekend, spending it at home watching the celebration events and venturing out on walks. Today the husband went out to GM a tabletop game so kiddo and I were on our own, cooking and eating Japanese-style curry befor we went out walking. We're all showered and relaxing now, and I wiped down the bedroom floor. Showers feel extra fulfilling if I get a cleaning task in beforehand! :D

With the weekend drawing to a close, next week will be more waiting and looking for work in between rest and chores. Going to be poking a couple of people on stalled publishing projects and putter around on editing and technical tasks. Maybe some creative tasks too if I can hack it. It's still sticky and unpleasant outside but there's a bit of autumn in the air, and we'll be feeling the chill before long.

At whole, I love character development and the relationships between characters. I have a strong stomach, but please no watersports. Rape, torture and such are okay, but remember to warn properly so I can get my mind into a right setting before starting to read. ^^

If you make a character (the one I say I love) disabled, I'll love you until the end of Earth. But no magic healing! I hate that trope. I love it when my favourite character is hurt badly.

Actually, I love fics where bad things happen to my favourite character. BUT NO CHARACTER DEATH!!!

My headcanon is that he was tortured to death, which is why he is so...well. Go as brutal as you like, or just gloss it over.

As for Shi Wudu...the thought of him being willing to do anything to save his younger sibling is my favourite part of him, and I could see him enter both of these relationships from that angle. WHile I am more able to see his relationship become more healthy with He Xuan (after A LOT OF work), with Jun WU I cant see it not be horribly toxic, unhealthy and dead-dovey because, well, Jun wu.

I love Shen JIu because he is just so...sharp. I would love it if that stayed. I am willing that his relationships with Tianlang-jun and Zhuzhi-lang are healthy and romantic, but not with Qiu Jianluo.

Og!Moshang i can see be healthy or really fucked up, I dont mind either, but I would like to see OG!Shang Qinghua as more than a traitorous scum who betrays everyone and can never be relayed on. Layers, like an onion, you know?

I am willing that his relationships with Lan Qiren and JIang Cheng are healthy and romantic, but not with Jin Guangshan (duh). Wen Ruohan can go either way, there is a good story behind both options.

With FG and Osiris I am looking for something creepy, nonconny, abusive and horrible relationship. No healthiness here! Also doesnt have to have any sex if you arent comfortable. Does Osiris finally get to take Seth to Duat? WIll FG grab Seth and bring him to his home country? Or does Seth escape?

I would like Cedric/Orube to be a healthy relationship, but not Cedric/Phobos.

A fic where Cedric lives and continues on his path to redemption. Or where he is still under the thumb and manipulated by Phobos.

I would love if during the time he canonically died he would instead be seriously injured, permanently disabled, I mean. No magical healing! How would his recovery be? And by recovery I mean him dealing with his disability and learning to live again.

I like the headcanon that he and the others were actually struggling kpop stars that Jinu picked and turned to demons, but i can totally vibe with him being decades or centuries old. I am really interested in his backstgry in that case!

What happened to him after the movie? What is his life in hell? How will he get to his partner(s)?

I will take anything with Abby!

I have just one petpeeve: JInu shouldn't be some sort of special demon, i would like for him to be just a regular demon who got lucky/unlucky. No special powers or destiny please!

A new Ben January book came out in July, and I had tremendous fun with it! This is one of the books in the series where Hambly goes Full Pulp with the plot, and she is delightful at it - buried treasure, pirates, abandoned houses crumbling in the swamp, identity shenanigans, long-lost relatives ...
