Sozin honestly did believe what he was doing was right. He had a kind of arrogance you see in a lot of people who had to work a little bit but had a generally easy road to sucess that made him think he had all the answers, and he had found the right way of doing things, not only for himself, but for everyone, and if everybody else wasn't as successful as him (or the Fire Nation more generally) it was their own stupid fault, and they should be grateful to him for teaching them better... through conquest, naturally. He was an Amon more than an Ozai. Hisintentions were good, but his methods were vile.
