It's ridiculously prevalent! As I said, I think we're just so distanced from our food sources that we forget how they work and how vital they are. It boggles the mind.
It doesn't help that I've been thinking more about this than usual, because in my current novel, one of the main countries keeps getting conquered because it's a breadbasket. And I'm writing a White Collar AU where after a global food and energy collapse (and population collapse), the world turns to extensive slave labor, most of which is involved in food production.
