Many condolences. It's hard to wrap my head around the cruelty humans are capable of toward other humans (and other creatures, and the world for that matter). I've long since given up on the idea that there's any sense or plan to any of it, though the religious may see some meaning. Religious or not, people will keep on trying to make sense of the impossible with the human gift of storytelling.
Two stories I recently read that seemed related:
The story of a Jewish family of dwarfs surviving Auschwiwitz: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/23/the-dwarves-of-auschwitz
Because people are people everywhere, the ruckus that went down when an Israeli football club, Jerusalem's FC Beitar, signed on two Muslim players: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9066752/view/full/jerusalem-fc-beitar-signed-two-muslim-players-russia-february-stirred-national-controversy
