As a Christian, Pentecostal, its not that I am trying to be condescending or even possessive but rather that I am trying not to be offensive. Because as I am constantly reminded everywhere I go, the Holocaust was a horrible thing that happened. And yes, it happened to so many other people, Hitler and Germany happened to so many other people, but whenever someone talks about the horrors that happened in WWII, this is the event that is most highlighted. By Jews, by non-Jews, by Hollywood and I feel that if I talk about all the other people that were affected, even to very German people, everyone will think that I'm not sympathetic to the suffering of the Jewish people. That if I dare say that the Armenians also suffered horrible persecution and that their suffering isn't even acknowledged in most countries that people will think that I'm racist or bigoted, or worse, antisemitic. It's a mentality taught to us in schools, on television, so it's difficult to be able to see beyond that to what lies beneath.
I can't speak for Evangelical Christians, or any other Christians but I can speak for myself in saying that it's so hard now in days not to offend anyone, because just trying not to do that offends people. I don't want to offend anyone, but it's nerve-wracking speaking or even dealing with people because there's that line you're not supposed to cross and it's different with everyone.
