There's a tendency to shrink things down to the lowest common denominator when it doesn't directly (or doesn't seem to) affect you personally- and that's where it gets easy to set off little landmines of hurting-others, whether through intent, carelessness, willful ignorance, or genuine accidental clumsiness.
