I don't know if Bryan and Michael will ever read this, but I would like to thank you for having the bravery to post it and share your experiences. For years as I child, I too was in an abusive relationship with another little girl, my older sister. I know at the time I was terrified of her and her rapidly shifting moods, but I could never really articulate why. Every time I've tried to explain my relationship with her to others there is this attitude like I'm being petty or an awful sister for not forgiving the way she used to steal my stuff, threaten my friends, or pound on my bedroom window in the middle of the night. I don't know how that compares with your experience, but I too related to the Fire Kids and what they went through with Azula.
I've also known too many men and boys who have been terrorized by their current or ex-girl friends to find the Eska-Bolin relationship funny. The sexist trope that women can not abuse men is not only physiologically damaging, it can endanger lives. Like you, I expected more from the writers of Korra.
