Because I was looking at LOK book one in the light of Avatar, I didn't see two abuse victims becoming villains as an indictment against abuse victims, especially given how complex and different the brothers were, and how much one of them seemed to be honestly doing what he thought was best for the world. I also saw the murder-suicide in light of Avatar as a third answer to the dilemma that each abuse victim is posed with throughout the Avatar verse. Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee choose redemption and freedom, Ozai, Azula, and Hama choose to become abusers themselves, and Tarrlok chooses to give up, and chooses to take that choice away from his brother. Interestingly in the Avatar verse, all of the abuse victims mentioned, and mind, it's only conjecture that Ozai was abused, but given that Azulon wanted to kill Zuko to punish him, I think it's a good bet, all of the abuse victims I mentioned except Hama were coerced into doing the sort of horrible things that need redemption.
However, looking at those writing credits, I might have to rethink this analysis. Those graphics really bring it home.
