I hear you on the headcanon destruction. I had written two-thirds of an AU where Korra vanished into the Spirit World at the end of season 1, and never came back, and posited that one of the consequences of that, plus the abortive revolution, was that new seats would be added to the Republic City Council. Sort of a baby step towards democracy, or at least better representation. I felt quite hesitant about it, but figured people would be forgiving because, hey, AU.
Then season 2 started, and it turns out they ABOLISHED THE COUNCIL ALL TOGETHER. And now I'm left clutching my fic, going, "I know you want to be finished, but I think you might be broken!"
Closed canons. I always swear I'm going to stick with closed canons, and I never do.
