As nasty as Snape was in delivering that particular emotional blow to Harry, I wrote it and then thought "Oh that's right, he still blames himself for Lily!" and then felt like an idiot for not putting that in here somewhere before. Mind, since it plays a big part in the emotional climax, I guess I shouldn't feel too much like a, erm, dunderhead.
Hermione as a rule tends to get swept up in her high ideals and grand schemes to the point that she doesn't necessarily consider all of the pitfalls. While the saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely" may not apply perfectly, but Harry's disillusionment could be as destructive as outright corruption. At the very least, Harry would be miserable for a very long time if he joined the Wizengamot, and probably ineffectually miserable.
nape's masochistic motivations aside, I don't think he fared any better than an idealist would in his position. he's certainly more cynical, self-loathing, and unhappy than he was before, and that says quite a lot.
(It's alright; it was one extraordinarily long thread anyway.)
