It makes sense, and guilt is a good way to keep someone doing something like that, but I do think Snape became even more unhappy and self-loathing than he had been previously. Thus as far as his psyche is concerned, he made a bad situation worse. Of course, by then he was very used to those emotions, and he could last longer. besides, his self-disillusionment happened before he began, which helped.

The latter. it's phenomenally awkward to give one's son the first name of one's still living (or even dead, really) son as a middle name, don't you think? Plus, in Jewish superstition, it's really bad luck to name a child after someone still living, and I must have a bit of that ingrained in me. In case you were wondering, the new middle name is Alastor after Mad-Eye Moody.
