Have you read Sarah Monette at all? She does the morally ambiguous thing very well, while still managing to keep she characters sympathic. It helps she's got a PhD in Lit and is writing her books deliberately to mess with genre tropes. Warning, the books tend to be violent with a side of horrifingly violent, so avoid them if that's not your cuppa.

I've been finding it interesting to read the various responses to your story. There is this odd divide between the Snape sympathetic and Harry sympathetic responses, which I think is very much a reflection of people preferences coming in. Personally I think you've done a very good job making them both real people. (And I'm forcibly restraining myself from launching into a long discourse on fate vs. free will and the nature of personal responsibility given an apparently deterministic system. Must.. Stop... Philosophising...Arrrrrrg!!!)
