I'm a fantasy geek, a secondary world fantasy geek, an unabashed geek, exactly the sort of viewer Hollywood movie makers can count on to go to any decent secondary world fantasy movie right? Especially one based on a television series with an incredibly detailed and beautifully crafted Asian and Inuit world, right? Avatar the Last Airbender should be having me on giddy fannish pins and needles, right?
Erm, not so much.
Now, I'm not usually one for using visuals to make a point, but everyone's doing it, and damn, the images make the point so much more effectively than I normally do.

Of course we live in a post-racial society! What was I thinking?
It isn't just the cast. The Classical Chinese writing, such a feature on the show, and probably other important cultural aspects have been excised. The worst thing is that if there are enough fantasy fans like me who boycott this film to make a dent in the profits, the only lesson the Hollywood movie makers will "learn" is that fantasies that take place way from Europe, America, or pseudoEurope are doomed to failure.
Look, everyone, just click onto the images above to go to racebending.com (the images' creators) whose brilliant administrators say everything much better than I can, and while you're there, check out their photo essay.
On a lighter note, has anyone noticed how much Dev Patel (Zuko) looks like the animated Sokka?
