I've found the proportion of good writers writing het fic grows as the number of good female characters in the canon grows. Then you get to a certain point and there is femslash. Yay! I just look for pairings that catch my interest, slash, femslash, or otherwise, though I have a strong preference for actually seeing bisexuals in fic.

I'm writing an original story with a strong romantic subplot, so I've been reading a lot of ship fics to see what works and what really really doesn't. Fandom is really good for the latter sometimes.
