JKR's story is based on "Kid is chosen one and picked on for his whole life... that is until he got chosen." Which is a trope that occurs a whole lot in a lot of fantasy and is seriously boring.
Part of the reason I wrote "Between" (aside from my despair at all the bad Slytherin!Harry fics and my wish to make James have to beg Snape for something) was that I wanted Harry to have his chosen one status and still be picked on in school pretty badly. In fact, the people who torment him the worst in school are the ones on whose side he is on in the war. I plan to deal more overtly with this in a oneshot sequel I'm writing.
