I've seen the 'get rid of memories of James so he can work with Harry' explanation in a lot of fics. But, when the exact same memory Harry saw in the pensive was in the set in The Prince's Tale, it just clicked for me that Snape must have been using the bowl to hide proofs of and his motivation for betraying Voldemort.
Which in retrospect seems the bare minimum precaution considering Harry broke into Severus' mind the very first time he pushed Snape out his.
Given this interpretation, Snape's rage after Harry snooped makes a lot more sense as "Are you trying to get me Killed?!" than as "You read my diary!"
HP is certainly unambiguous compared to a lot of the stuff on my shelves. :) I tend to think of them as 'General Audience Literature' rather than children's books though, especially 6 & 7. There seems to be a depth and awareness to them that is lacking in, say, the OZ books for example.
(Nothing to do with me not wanting to admit to spending so much time obsessing over children's book. It's all about the literary merit ^_^)
