I kinda think it had more to do with getting rid of the memories so he could work with Harry and so that he wasn't to angry he couldn't occlude his own mind. Hah, see, my theory has nuance!
I think Snape spent a lot of time wondering why Harry was trying to get them all killed. This is why one should never restrict information from an independently minded resourceful individual with "a certain disregard for the rules." He would have gotten them all into much less trouble if he knew what was going on.
There is the theory that Oz is all about the free silver political movement in the late nineteenth century... We spent a very interesting class period on it.
Children's books are often more philosophically complex than adult books, especially fantasy. I have a large soft spot for them. After all, C.S. Lewis said "A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest," and Ursula LeGuin said "Sure, writing for children is easy. Just as easy as raising them."
JKR seemed to have written each book for an audience the same age as Harry. The first one was written for eleven year olds, the second for twelve year olds, up to the seventh, written for seventeen year olds.
