Onemanga (http://www.onemanga.com/Full_Metal_Alchemist/) has the manga free to read, which might be a good way of checking it out (the manga is much better than at least the first anime). The lead characters are definitely looking for a 'cure,' which might bother you, but they at least have good reason (while one character lost an arm and a leg, the second lead lost his whole body) and the world, which has been wracked by war, has a very busy steampunk prosthetics industry.
