I wonder-- have you read the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster-Bujold? Miles is anything but a poor suffering saint or weak in the least, and the series is chock-full of plain sense about societal views (I love Cordelia for her "Betan, you know" common sense approach to Barrayaran societal mores, and her dealing with her son(s)).
