Neal had a tape deck in his cell, and five tapes, blues, rock, jazz, and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. He used to pop it in, sit on his bed, close his eyes, and pretend he was sitting in the audience.
When he was as kid, all the art books told him art was truth, which was ridiculous. He lied with art all the time. He loved the lies.
But that moment, when the conductor picked up the baton, and the musicians merged into one, the partnership between composer and players wasn’t something he could fake, and he couldn’t pretend for long.
