And the whole time, Zuko knows he has this huge, ugly scar, but he's never seen it, so he still pictures himself looking like the way he did before. So when he sees himself with the great big ugly scar, short hair, and Water Tribe clothes, he really sees a stranger staring back.
It takes Yue a while to ask, being polite, but when she does, and she finds out how he got it... It's just not normal to do that to your kid.
Zuko would be lucky if Pakku didn't drown hi after one too many attempts to set him on fire.
