where he is just too awesome. If I have Iroh alive with Zuko held captive, Iroh will rescue him in five minutes flat.

Oh, I totally understand that reasoning. My very first fandom was a kiddie comic that had one character with superhuman strength, Jerom. Every one of my fics (composed only in my head) started with "Jerom was away on holiday", because if Jerom was present, no logical plot could ever take place, as he could solve everything immediately in some way or another.

I kind of feared/suspected that you'd killed Iroh. He was very emphatically Not There, and there's not many possible reasons for that sort of situation :( Still, his death here was pretty damn horrible. I suppose he might have been able to stay alive even in freezing water, for a while, but with nowhere to swim to... Oh god, will stop thinking about that now.

Zuko's despair came across loud and clear. "We're keeping you here because it's the best place to be for you, food and shelter and safety, you're not getting that anywhere else, right kiddo?" would only make it ten times worse for him.

Now that I think about it a bit more... Yes. If Zuko and Yue were tragically in love, it would be tragic tragedy never before seen in the history of tragedies, because they'd both think it's the right thing to do for Yue to sacrifice herself for her people. They'd spend forever convincing each other of it. They'd just stare at each other and sigh, then maybe talk about duty a bit in veiled terms while not coming to the point at any moment, then sigh some more.

I'm a mean person who doesn't give you an ending that happy.

No worries, I'll make one up! You cannot chain my mind.
