Actually, Sorcha's teacher sounds as if he has a lot in common with many of the (almost universally unscrupulous) magicians in Sarah Rees Brennan's YA "Demon" trilogy--"The Demon's Lexicon," "The Demon's Covenant," and "The Demon's Surrender."
