Once there was Bao, who had a thousand faces, and she had shared them with Koh. She was the oldest. She was the first.
She covered the bottomless emptiness in him with face after face.
She was wonderful.
And then one night, she tried to steal the face of the first Avatar, and the woman murdered the lovely Bao. When he found her, her faces were scattered all over their lair.
Underneath each face was an egg. Their eggs. Their children.
He gathered up her scattered faces, and slowly added more to keep them company, and he tended the eggs, feeling the lives growing inside him, and the promise they held.
Until he came back one day and found Avatar Kuruk smashing them to pieces.
He no longer left his lair.
Now the broken shells and the dried yokes littered the corner of his lair, and sometimes, he curled around them, protecting what was left.
