This looks like I can answer with my cell phone keyboard!  (On a side note, please forgive my more numerous than usual spelling mistakes in this.  I don't have spellcheck on my phone, and my spelling is lamentable at the best of times.)

Give me a character and I'll tell you a piece of my personal headcanon. Any fandom is welcome here, provided that I am reasonably familiar with it.

Like Zuko, I have a lot of headcanon for Mai.

I don't think Mai was the unfavorite child after the birth of her brother. The logic for that fanon tends to be that the real world cultures that the Fire Nation is based on frequently have girls being pushed aside when their brothers are born, but the Fire Nation seems to be pretty big on gender equality. I also don't believe that they see her only as a means to advance their career through marriage because she's a girl. They see her marriageability as a way to advance their careers, but I'm pretty sure they would be pushing to betroth little Mao to Azula just as ardently as they did to betroth little Mai to Zuko. I also think Tom-Tom is pretty neglected himself, because if he weren't they would have noticed he were missing much faster. I just think her parents aren't any good at being parents.

Also, I like to think that Mai is not naturally skilled with people, and instead of trying to teach their daughter the necessary social skills to know what to do and say in a given situation, they just told her to shut up. Azula of course compounded this learned tendency of hers, because it's just safest to be quiet around her. So when she does open her mouth, disaster.

Are you familiar with Sebastian Shaw of the Hellfire Club from X-Men?

No I'm not. I never got into X-men, and the only movie I caught this summer was Brave.

This is all probably going to be jossed in a few months.

Living on the compound, training to be the Avatar was an extremely lonely childhood, a lot like the ones experienced by young Olympic athletes. For a high energy extrovert like her, this was positively torture. This is part of the reason she was drawn to pro bending. It was familiar to her, and in it, she found a world full of people, just like her, training their tails off at bending in a way not many people in the Korra era do.

*nod* I think that, while they might have felt it necessary given the way the last Avatar was hunted, keeping Korra cooped up in a controlled facility was possibly one of the worst things they could have done for her personally, and for her balancer-of-the-world education.

Unfortunately, it left her with the diplomatic skills of a bulldozer. *grin*

Huh, to bad.

Just have to ask: what fandoms are you familiar with? Among your tags I can only see AtLA, Harry Potter & White Collar.

Any of the books found on my book reviews tag, plus Criminal Minds, Buffy (the show, not the comics) Angel (same) Brimstone, Leverage, American Law and Order (except Criminal Intent) Disney movies, Waking the Dead, New Tricks, Burn Notice, The Closer, NCIS, In Plain Sight, The Good Wife, a few other things. I haven't been keeping up with the Batverse, and my experience with Marvel is limited to the Spiderman movies with Toby McGuire.

Thanks.

How about Howl?

I like to imagine he got his butt kicked on a regular basis as a teen in Wales because everybody thought he was gay. Also, I think he takes the small child form he used in House of Many Ways at home very frequently, just because it annoys Sophie.

Question- will you be taking secondary requests once the first has been filled, or is this a one-per-customer meme?

certainly they're allowed. I'm stuck at the doctor's office all day getting shots, so I'd love more distractions. (Feeding the dragons is nice too)

Whoohoo for distractions, ech for shots!

Then, if I may- Bolin? And Tahno.

Bolin: I have some thoughts in the Mako comment that apply to both brothers, if you're interested. As for Bolin alone, I figure since he was about six when his parents died that he was still at the age where he didn't get that death is permanent, so he asked Mako for months when their parents were coming back, which was really hard in his brother. Also, Mako hung around the probending stadium and subbed for other teams for extra money before the Fire Ferrets, and Bolin grew up watching this and swore someday he was going to help Mako pay for them both and play on a team with him.

I'm the only person I know who is completely meh on Tahno (I was meh on Draco Malfoy too, and they strike me as similar characters) but instead of subscribing to the swampbending theory, I think he's half Fire Nation, because swampbender faces aren't that narrow. I also think he grew up poor and now that he's got some money and fame it's going to his head, and he'll calm down in a few years. (Provided he gets his bending back and Amon's little speech didn't destroy his career).

If we can request more, then I ask for...Sozin!

Date: 2012-08-07 05:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Sozin honestly did believe what he was doing was right. He had a kind of arrogance you see in a lot of people who had to work a little bit but had a generally easy road to sucess that made him think he had all the answers, and he had found the right way of doing things, not only for himself, but for everyone, and if everybody else wasn't as successful as him (or the Fire Nation more generally) it was their own stupid fault, and they should be grateful to him for teaching them better... through conquest, naturally. He was an Amon more than an Ozai. Hisintentions were good, but his methods were vile.

You know, this completely matches my headcanon for Sozin. From what I gather, even a 100 years ago, the Fire Nation was the most technologically advanced and no doubt wealthy as well from their trade in spices and metalworking. That would have DEFINITELY contributed to Sozin's belief that the Fire Nation was the superior nation.

Date: 2012-08-07 06:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Yes, exactly, in fact, i think the Fire Nation's greater technological prowess and prosparity at the time is canon. I'm sure I remember that from "The Avatar and the Firelord"... The fact that he was absolutely wrong didn't mean he wasn't oing what he thought was best.

This. Mai was her parents' ticket to further their careers. The only time Tom-Tom would have been favoured over her would've possibly been directly after the Boiling Rock, but then she became the Fire Lord's girlfriend so it would have been a moot point.

Fastest way to knock me out of a story is when people make the Fire Nation sexist. There are a lot of things wrong with the Fire Nation, but from what we've seen in the show, sexism is definitely not one of them.

Don't worry, you're not the only one (with both him and Draco).

If this is still open can I pick General Iroh (from Korra, though if you don't have much of an opinion of him then the original one)?
