Summary: Living in hiding takes its toll.

The Scariest Day

The scariest day of his life was the day he told his wife what he was. She was six months pregnant, and he should have told her on their wedding night, but he was a coward. He knew he was a coward. He came from a family of cowards.

That day, she screamed and raged and he waited for the soldiers to come to their door to kill him. But she didn’t tell.

Sometimes, after she let her hair down in the evenings, and before she braided it back up for bed, he bent a breeze to play with it as he ran his fingers through, and she would laugh at him.

They had children together. Ty Hei was only the first. There was honor in keeping his family safe.

The scariest day of his life was the day he told his wife what he was until the scariest day became the day he sent Ty Lee off to school.

The rest of his children he could tutor, but Ty Lee was only a year older than Princess Azula, and people would be suspicious if he didn’t send her hoping they’d become friends and win their family favor. No one could ever be suspicious of them.

It should have been Ty Un, who liked to liked to collect dolls and crack jokes, and could keep her feet on the ground. She would have bored the Princess. Boring was good. Boring was safe, and kept the family safe.

Ty Lee bent like she breathed, and her feet never touched the ground.

But Ty Lee turned out to be the best of anyone at hiding it. She bent and fought at the Princess’ side and no one ever noticed, because she was Ty Lee.

They taught all of their children to fight. Ty Yan even joined the navy. The day she did, he and his wife heaved a sigh of relief. No one would expect to find an airbender in the Fire Navy, any more than they expected to find them among the Fire Nation nobility.

He taught all of his children to hide as he had been taught to hide. He taught them to smile, and laugh, and play stupid, and keep the conversation on everybody else. It kept them safe. It kept them all alive. And he knew how much they must hate it.

His mother’s father’s mother had passed down what she could to her children, who passed it down to theirs. Surrounded by people who wanted them dead, the only way to keep a little bit of their history alive was to keep it secret and teach their children. There was honor in keeping their people alive.

When the war ended, it was hard to remember there was honor in speaking.

The scariest day of his life was the day he sent Ty Lee off to school until the scariest day became the day he told the world what he was and watched his children learn to fly.

I don't usually read fanfic, but I read this before I looked at the icon and really liked it. (Also, I've never seen Avatar but it still made sense.)

ps ~ I hope you don't mind that I friended you.

Thanks! The icon was made by [livejournal.com profile] beckyh2112 using a quote from Sara Rees Brennan's The Demon's Lexicon.

Lol. Ty Lee and her family being crypto-airbenders is a pet theory of mine that somehow worms its way into all my A:tLA fanfic. This is one of those cases where not having watched the show might make the fic make more sense.

Not at all; I'm flattered!

Wow, did I write icon? *facepalm* I must have been really tired. I meant link to the community (essentially the first sentence).

(Though I do like the icon -- loved the book.)

Awesome! I like this backstory to Ty Lee and her family. :) I like the details of the family, hiding in plain sight... also, how suspicious it would be if they DIDN'T try to curry favour with the princess. Neat! ... Now I want Aang meeting the family, and possibly giving them pointers as an airbending master. ;)

Oh, Aang's over the moon. Suddenly, he finds that instead of just one Airbender being alive, there's Ty Lee's whole, huge extended family! Whole huge, crazy family full of soldiers and meat-eaters.

*blush* Ty Lee the airbender is my canon, and it's the only head canon I've ever really had that I desperately wished the writers would make canon. I went to a lecture on crypto-Jews in the American South West under Spanish rule right before writing this. It shows.

It really does. It was interesting that in canon, Ty Lee and Aang have the same color eyes and hair. I lot of stories I read always assume that she's an airbender. Not to mention that with the new Avatar series coming out, there's a mention of there still being some airbenders around.

I hope so, I know Aang and Katara's son is around, airbending. Maybe the airbenders around are just his kids and grandkids, but I hope not.

Well,

"Avatar Roku, an Avatar incarnation, died in a volcano incident and soon after the Fire Nation invaded the world. The Fire Lord at that time, Sozin, wiped out all of the Air Temples knowing that the next Avatar would be an airbender. 100 years had past, and the Fire Nation was winning the war. The… More new Avatar, Aang, was discovered in suspended animation in an iceberg by two Water Tribe siblings, Katara and Sokka. It was Aang's destiny to stop Firelord Ozai, a decedent of Sozin, from using a comet's power to end the war once and for all. To halt the advances between the Fire Nation versus the rest of the remaining nations, Aang had some help from friends in his quest to master the elements that were left: water, earth, and fire. One was Katara, a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe was his waterbending teacher, while Sokka was her older brother. Toph was a blind earthbender who taught Aang her martial art, and Zuko, Firelord Ozai's son, originally hunted down Aang to restore his lost honor with his father, but later helped Aang bend fire.
70 years have past, and Aang, the previous Avatar incarnation who was the last airbender has passed on. A waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe is the now the new Avatar. Her name is Korra, a girl who is rebellious, alone, and ready to take on whatever issues or battles she must face. It is Korra's destiny to protect the world as it was for her predecessors. She has three elements mastered: water, earth, and fire. The trouble is, she needs to master air while there are very few airbenders left. Tenzin, Aang and Katara's son, is the only person who can teach Korra how to airbend and it is her mission to find him or risk losing the new world's industrial melting pot, Republic City, to crime and anti-bender revolts.
Can Korra live up to her past life and keep the world in balance?"

aggravatingly and yet tantalizingly vague.

Lol! That's the longest and more informative of the summaries I have found. :-)
