Remember how a little while back, Livejournal enabled the crossposting of comments to facebook and twitter without the journal entry poster's consent? and how the hew and cry from their customer base (which would be us) caused them to change it so that users could only cross-post comments on public entries?

Well, Livejournal has gone back on its word. Now anyone who has opted into Cyrillic services can cross-post comments on anyone's (even someone who has not opted in) f-locked entries.  The solution Livejournal proposed before was not satisfying, but acceptable.  This smacks of deceit and manipulation on the part of the Livejournal business administration.  If you disagree with this move on the part of the administration (which also smacks of ethnic prejudice) please comment on the above linked post.

Thought I'd warn you all, this mess has unfortunately not gone away.

*sigh* I think the option for now will have to be to opt out of Cryillic services. I was never opted in, so it's not a problem for me... but then again, I don't have any Russian-speaking friends. I could imagine this will be a big problem for a lot of people.

I actually speak Russian, though I'm a bit rusty. However, it doesn't have anything to do with one's language settings. For a while, Livejournal has had a set of services originally developed for Russian speakers and Eastern Europeans that it now allows everyone to opt into. It also allows journalists to log into livejournal.ru/.

I have a question I haven't seen asked... I want to know whether LJ *plans* to turn it off in Cyrillic services. I don't know how those services work, but if they can put different rules in place then it's clearly not just a matter of changing the language settings! So is it possible that they plan to change it on Cyrillic services but it'll take extra time and they decided not to wait in going live with the rest of the changes?

(Also, "ethnic prejudice"? Isn't that going a bit far? I don't see any evidence for that.)

It's just the slant of having it under Cyrillic services (which really has nothing to do with language despite the name) that a lot of non Eastern European users don't know about.

Cyrillic services is an opt in program of Livejournal's that's full of assorted programs that not everyone wants to avail themselves of that were for the most part originally developed for Russian and Eastern European users, but are now available to all. According to the post, Livejournal has no plans to remove the cross-posting feature from the Cyrillic services, and they're treating it just like any other feature most users don't like but some do by sticking it there. Unfortunately, you can't opt out of having people able to crosspost their comments on your posts.

this is just a horrible, misguided attempt to appear "current". they think everyone's doing the facebook/twitter thing without realize a lot of us are here 'cause we don't want anything to do with those places. and sweeping it under another area of LJ is just, I donno, smoke-screen and denial.

And even those people like me who have a facebook page frequently strive to keep those parts of our online lives separate. The Livejournal admins don't seem to understand that the Livejournal community has developed a culture of anonymity, and they're messing with it.

for the life of me, I can't figure out what you're replying to, given that this is a post about Livejournal and it's crossposting policies. I have written multiple fic with Snape in them, but this is unrelated to them.
