attackfish: Yshre girl wearing a kippah, text "Attackfish" (Jet Juko TDL quote)
[personal profile] attackfish
So I just finished writing something so impossibly sweet that I swear all my teeth just rotted in my head from it.  And since I have to write floranna's fic for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti  (and her request is full of lovely angst) I need to get myself in a darker writing groove.  To further this goal, I’m watching Criminal Minds, and I’m asking you guys to send me your darkest, most angst producing prompts for Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Comment with up to five, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because I spawned a wild AU in [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet ’s head, that she has been writing delightfully twisted installments for, and because I delayed writing [livejournal.com profile] floranna’s promised fic to work on my novel.

Please no rape or sexually explicit requests.  I’m a big believer that there needs to be more gen darkfic in fandom.

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] avocado_love .

Meme Closed and Finished

Despite the fact that I asked for no requests involving rape or sexually explicit requests, my brain decided to take me there all on its own in two instances.  I've done my best to warn as accurately as I can in both in a way that the warnings themselves are non-triggery.  I'd also like to put up a blanket warning for violence.

Why do so many fans think it needs sex to get really twisted? Gen darkfic rocks!

It was Ty Lee who noticed it first. Of course it was Ty Lee. She knew the signs. Her new leader always pressed just a little too hard when she sparred, always had to win just a little too much, always waited just a little too long to let go when her warriors tapped out.

Everything had to be just a little too perfect. Everybody had to be just a little too obedient. And now she was talking about taking the Kyoshi warriors south to Sokka to help him command the Southern Water Tribe.

Maybe it was time to run away to join the circus again.

She’d run farther this time.

Yes, that is very Zhao. I feel sorry for that poor woman.

He got the idea of poisoning someone with the white jade plant from Iroh, didn't he? ;)
From: [identity profile] blue-lacquer.livejournal.com
Oh, that poor kid. Being a loan shark is something I wouldn't have thought of for Chit Sang, although it makes sense. Interesting. :)
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Thank you. If it makes you feel better, she's a nasty piece of work too.

Iroh would absolutely love to know that Zhao took his botany babbling as career advice.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
I flipped a coin between loan sharking and running a protection racket.

The arresting officers return him safe and sound and completely traumatized to his dad.

“I know you two are very different, but I believe you have a common interest.”

He laid the chest on the table and opened it to display the gold inside.

She didn’t get it. It wasn’t her fault she wanted freedom; anyone would if they didn’t know... He kept telling her how fragile she was. It didn’t matter how good she was. If fire hit her, she’d burn. She’d die. He wasn’t going to lose her because a bunch of kids thought they could save the world. They couldn’t. She didn’t understand. If he could just make her understand-

His baby girl just didn’t know how dangerous the world really was; how could she when he had kept her from it?

“The Avatar has kidnapped my daughter.” It was a polite fiction. He could see the disbelief on their faces, just behind the greed. He was paying them. They wouldn’t hurt her if he was the one paying them. “I want you to do whatever it takes to bring her home.”

Toph was going to hate him.

It didn’t matter. At least she’d be alive.

Loved this. And you know... the first paragraph was the spookiest part of all. The best Zuko could be is, like, a stud-horse for the next generation. And the last sentence... Oh Zuko... *hugs*
From: [identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com
LOL. At night the turtle-duck parents tell their little ducklings about the day the girl with the great lightening bolt... :D
From: [identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com
Yes. Yes, this is exactly what I could imagine Canon Lao thinking in his head. It totally justifies the situation... and I love the term "polite fiction". lol!
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Thank you!

Zuko'll show 'em, Zuko'll show them all! *hugs him*
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
My parents do this to me sometimes. Not... have me kidnapped, but freak out because the world's more dangerous for me and what I can't do is sometimes a lot more obvious than what I can to them. Sometimes it's hard to remember they're honestly worried.

And if I had a twelve-year-old, blind or not who wanted to run off and join people who got armies attacking them all the time, I'd lock her in her room until she came to her senses.

Me too! I have no idea where it came from, but it's a great phrase.
From: [identity profile] weirdlet.livejournal.com
Now *that* is good^^ And indeed- poor kid. Poor *dad*.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
I guess good's one word for it, not the one I'd use, but...

Makes you want to put Chit Seng right back in the Boiling Rock, doesn't it.
From: [identity profile] weirdlet.livejournal.com
Well yes, exactly. But the ficbit itself is great!

Really it’s more Iroh and Ozai, bit Zuko’s in the room...

Ozai visited. Iroh wished he hadn’t.

That man’s son tossed and turned on the bed, and somewhere through the haze of pain and herbs to make him sleep, Iroh hoped he felt the sheet being pulled up around him, something, anything. Zuko shivered. “Mom?”

“No, Prince Zuko.” Iroh bathed his forehead with cool water, careful not to drip any on the bandage.

“Your mother’s gone,” Ozai snapped.

Whimpering, Zuko turned towards his father’s voice and curled in on himself. Iroh wanted to set his brother on fire. “Do you have to be here?”

“I came to inform my son of his sentence.” His face didn’t move when he spoke.

“Are you out of your mind?”

“Careful, General Iroh.” Brushing what little hair his nephew had left out of his eyes, Iroh glared at his brother, but the glare wore itself away, until the expression left was just tired. “He is banished, until he can find and capture the Avatar.”

Iroh sighed and swallowed the fire that wanted to come out with that sigh. “I need to go pack.”

“What are you talking about?” Ozai narrowed his eyes.

“I am going with him.”

“Are you.”

“Someone should!” Zuko whimpered a little and thrashed, and Iroh did his best to soothe his nephew. “We’ll take my ship.”

“You are not permitted to deprive the Fire Nation navy of the services of that ship!” Ozai raged, advancing on his brother and the bed.

“Then how do you expect him to search for the Avatar?” he demanded, leaping to his feet.

“I’m not unreasonable,” his brother sneered. “I’ve already provided a ship and crew.”

“C-cold,” Zuko shuddered, burying ineffectively into the blankets. Iroh bowed his head.

Ozai smiled and Iroh could see his brother’s thoughts on his face and decided he was a fool. “Yes. You may accompany Zuko. He could use someone to teach him acquiescence.”

“I’m honored.” Iroh waited until his brother turned his back to answer with his own joyless smile.

By the time his nephew could tell the difference, they were already on the ship.

Aang dies in Ba Sing Se, and the planet slowly whethers and dies with him. The enviroment's dead by Sozin's Comet, with only Firebenders left alive.

I don't think I can fulfill this request. Canon states that the world has been around before the Avatar, and when Roku tells Aang he can die permanently, there's nothing to indicate it will have an adverse effect on nature other than the inherent problems of him not stopping the Fire Nation conquest. Now of course, given Ozai's tactics, that would destroy the world pretty handily, but the Fire Nation and Firebenders would go with it pretty swiftly, because purning that much land would put so much ash into the air that it would block out the sun, and therefor their primary source of power when the comet's not around, and also the only way they would be able to grow crops.

You're free to request something else though, four other things, actually.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Man, girl, you really really really want me to write Zuzu with a bum leg, don’t you?

“Well look at this, enemies and traitors all working together,” Azula sneered. Zuko gritted his teeth. “I’m done. I know when I’m beaten. You got me. A princess surrenders with honor.”

When the fire hit him in the leg, he stared at his sister in abject disbelief. He wasn’t dead. He wasn’t dead.

Then the pain hit and he almost blacked out. The smell of burned flesh made his stomach roil, and the way he had been dwelling in his memories lately, it shouldn’t have surprised him that the smell pitched him right back into them.

He heard screaming, and it took him a while to realize it was him.

His uncle’s arms were around him, and he could hear his breath in his ears, so close to a sob on every exhale.

He blinked hard against the firelight, and in front of the spots in his eyes and the tears filming across them, he could see the Water Tribe girl’s feet as she came closer. “Nononono, go away!”

“Nephew,” Uncle whispered urgently, hands bending away the fires still burning on his flesh and clothes. Zuko grabbed for his wrist and couldn’t make himself let go.

“Zuko, I can help!”

“No!” he shouted, thrashing. The movement sent a wave of agony up from the burn. Uncle hugged him tighter, one armed. Hesitantly, she moved closer, streaming the water out of her waterskin Sparks flew from his free hand, but he couldn’t aim, and he couldn’t gather them together into flame. “Leave!”

The feet stopped advancing. She backed up and stopped, backed up and stopped, and then turned, and left with the Avatar.

He panted. He thought he was going to black out.

He thought it would be a good thing if he did.

~*~

Sometimes he thought he was thirteen again. His uncle held water to his lips, and kept him warm. It was familiar.

But that wasn’t familiar.

Sometimes, he could feel his uncle scraping away putrid flesh and searing the wound, and he thought he must be dreaming, or lost in delirium again.

“Azula always lies.”

Uncle’s snore cut itself short as he was jerked out of his doze. “What was that?”

Zuko opened his eyes, glazed and fever-bright, and turned them on his uncle. “Azula always lies.”

“Almost always.” He held even more water to his nephew’s lips and swept Zuko’s hands out of the way when he tried to push it back.

~*~

The morning the fever broke, Zuko pushed himself up on his shoulder and leaned against the crumbling wall, tossing off the half-eaten blankets his uncle had found somewhere, but as soon as he tried to stand, his uncle was at his side, pushing him down again. “Rest, nephew. You have been very sick.”

“I’ve had enough resting!” he snapped back, bracing himself against the wall.

But as soon as he tried to get his leg beneath him, he found there wasn’t any leg there.

“Rest nephew, recover your strength.”

“Recover my strength?” he yelled, knocking bits of plaster loose from the wall. “What about my leg?”

Iroh shook his head.

~*~

“But I don’t feel any shame at all! I’m as proud as ever!”

“Prince Zuko, pride is not the object of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.”

Zuko looked away. “Well… my life has been nothing but humbling lately.”

Uncle glanced to the side and then back. “I have another idea. I will teach you a firebending move that even Azula doesn’t know,” he paused, eyes glittered wickedly, “because I made it up myself!”

~*~

Hours later, Zuko found himself practicing the movements and letting his energy flow.

lol, there's more to this coming, and I have a thousand or so more words already written. Unfortunately, it's all coming out of order. grr.

For some reason I don't feel any ounce of guilt for that. XD
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
It was a general’s duty to comfort his wounded men. Fong did a general’s duty. He had once been one of these men. They were in his care.

Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw their faces and heard their cries, and felt the fire blasts and sword cuts of his own past bite into him again. He was lucky, and he knew it.

When their comrades could, they brought these men home, and lay them on hospital beds, and only sometimes visited. Ripped from the men whom they had fought with, trapped, and useless, and unable to leave, they turned their faces away from him when he came, but he didn’t mind.

Some went mad from it, and they needed him most. He did a general’s duty, but when he left, they were still crying and screaming.

His men were dying, and those who didn’t... He sent them home in pieces.

This war had to end soon. They couldn’t lose this war. They couldn’t.

When he heard the Avatar had returned, he could look his men in the face again.

*nods*

Nothing worse than a battle lost but a battle won- and either way, the pieces you have to clean up look really similar.
