Prompt: Sifu Suki meets Jeong Jeong
Fire Sifu Suki meets Jeong Jeong
Date: 2010-12-11 04:04 am (UTC)Suki planted her feet in the powdery dirt and stood her ground. “I have to.”
“No, you do not.” His eyes reflected the candle light, glinting in the gloom. “You must not.”
Aang shuffled his feet awkwardly, and Suki grimaced. Her finger bumped into her festival mask when she went to scratch her nose. “Look, Roku said he has to master them all before Sozin’s com-”
“Water is cool and soothing.” He cut her off. “Earth is steady and stable, but fire, fire is alive! It breathes, it grows! Without a bender, a rock will not throw itself! But fire will spread and destroy everything in its path if one does not have the will to control it. That is its destiny. He is not ready!”
Suki sucked in a breath, ready to tell him exactly what she thought of that, and how he was an idiot, and on Kyoshi, they learned about how fire was life, how it breathed and ate, and moved, and how benders had to work with it, and love it, or it would break away from them, but the air just dragged into her lungs and didn’t come out. At last, she closed her mouth and swallowed. “Do you know how many children learn fire without ever learning water and earth?”
“They are not the Avatar.” His face was too close to hers. She could feel the heat of his breath. “They are not full of air to fan the flames!”
“You aren’t the Avatar’s firebending master. You don’t decide when to teach him.” she shot back, voice level. “I do.”
Re: Fire Sifu Suki meets Jeong Jeong
Date: 2010-12-11 04:22 am (UTC)I wonder... if the Kyoshians seem to stick with the "fire is life" method to firebending, did Iroh ever learn from them during his post-Lu Ten wanderings? And if so, did they make him dress like a Kyoshi Warrior? A question for another prompt meme, sadly.

Date: 2010-12-11 03:05 am (UTC)Quiet Shadowed Places: Zuko teaches Aang
Date: 2010-12-11 05:09 am (UTC)“I don’t care what Toph can do!” Zuko snapped back, letting loose a blast of fire out over the edge of the cliff.
“It’s just you were talking about feeling the flames, and I thought...”
So Toph could use her bending to see. The Avatar, Aang, should really shut up about... “Look, you have to feel the fire. Your own fire. You have to feel it or you won’t be able to make it, and you have to feel the fire coming at you, because even when you see it, even when your brain tells you to run, you might not unless you feel it.”
“Wowwww,” Aang breathed, and went quiet for a moment, and Zuko thought he might actually have gotten through to him about... something. “That’s a lot of words in a row from you, Sifu Hotman.”
Zuko groaned weakly and turned towards where he knew the cliff edge had to be.
Aang reached up and put a hand on Zuko’s arm, and didn’t let him flinch away. His voice when it came was so much softer than it just had been. “Is that how you lost your eyes?”
“No.” But as soon as the word came out, Zuko wished he could take it back. It was just another way to describe it. Mostly. And Aang would ask now. “No.”

Date: 2010-12-12 04:09 am (UTC)Zuko breathed a thin jet of steam into his hands and curled them together for warmth, gazing out if the windows of his uncle’s stolen ship before stomping over and jabbing the plum blossom tile with his finger and sliding it across the board. “I don’t know why you even tried for the throne if all you want to do all day is play pai sho and drink tea.”
Iroh examined the board and lifted his lily tile. “It is your own fault for stowing away.” The tile clicked into place. “If you want to leave, just let Zhao take you home next time he catches up with us.”
“Shouldn’t you be out trying to find the Avatar?” The horrible queazy feeling he had felt when Uncle had first told him of the plan, and the terrible optimism he had had when he had snuck onto the ship and hid among the barrels of dried noodles and salted cow-pig sloshed around inside him like the tea in his uncle’s cup. He folded his arms and glowered, and didn’t even glance down at the board to see where his uncle had put the tile.
And there was the tiny part of him, lost deep inside that hoped they would have time to search for his mom, and find out wherever his father had forced her to hide.
Uncle’s eyes were hard and cold for only a moment. Zuko had learned not to notice those moments, just like he had learned not to remember why his mother was banished. “I am only seeking my rightful place, Prince Zuko. The oldest son should inherit, don’t you agree?”
The sickness inside got worse when the light from the ice poured into the cabin, and Zuko knew with a dull sort of certainty what that light had to mean.

Date: 2010-12-12 04:57 am (UTC)The sounds of the knife catching on the wood and slicing it away , chip by chip were probably very quiet, but each one caught Zuko’s ears. He stared at his absent leg, and not at the boy sitting next to him, or the man carving the foot of Zuko’s new leg.
He held his hand full of fire high, to light up the little metal room in the ship’s hold, and it pulsed with his breath. Shavings of wood fell to the floor. He wondered how often the mechanist made his own inventions, and if when he didn’t, he felt like he had to share.
Diagram on his knees, Teo’s own knife sliced skillfully through the wood of his own block of wood, teasing the rough shape of a leg out of it. Zuko swallowed. “Is... is this what you want to do? What your dad does?”
“What, invent things? Yeah, of course!” Teo’s hand with the knife jabbed into the air enthusiastically, and Zuko leaned away.
Zuko looked down again. Most kids wanted to be like their dads when they grew up.

From:Hufflepuff Zuko: Zuko’s father’s revealed
Date: 2010-12-13 08:40 pm (UTC)“Zuko, do you mind helping me carry the fanged geraniums? Azula, get out of the flowerbeds.”
He used everybody else’s last name. Zuko’s sister leapt up and back into her seat, something pressed against her chest.
It might be better if Longbottom were mean. Then Zuko could get angry at him.
“So Zuko.” Azula smiled winningly. “I think we should work together don’t you?” That was the other thing Zuko hated about Herbology. They had it with the Slytherins, and Azula-
Toph grabbed his arm and yanked him back towards her, dragging his chair across the greenhouse floor. “He’s working with me.”
“Fine,” Azula snapped, and glanced back at her friends. “Ty Lee, we’re working together.”
“But Mai and I-”
“Ty Lee!”
“Alright, Azula,” Ty Lee said quickly. While she beamed and bounced over to her friend, Mai heaved a sigh.
Professor Longbottom cleared his throat. “Now, I’m going to be walking around to see how you’re doing. If you need any help, just ask and I’ll come right over.”
Hand in her pocket, Azula watched Longbottom until his back was turned. “Hey Mai. Mai!”
“What?”
“I have a present for Zuko will you give him it for me?”
Mai eyed her warily. “What is it?”
Azula pulled her hand out of her pocket and threw whatever she had been hiding in it right at Mai. Zuko heard someone yelp, and then Mai scream, and he thought it must have been Mai and his mind had been playing tricks on him, and that he hadn’t heard a yelp at all.
The snake Azula had thrown draped over Mai’s neck, undulating. “Oh my God Azula!”
Zuko leapt to his feet and pulled his wand out of his robe. “What-”
“No one move!” Professor Longbottom rushed through the rows of tables, drawing his wand. “That’s an adder.”
“An adder!” Zuko yelled. “That wasn’t funny, Azula!”
The whole class turned to him, the snake forgotten. The poisonous snake around his friend’s neck just forgotten. Even Professor Longbottom was looking at him. He grabbed the snake and lifted it into the air, and he heard someone whisper, “What jusssst happened?”
“What?” Zuko snarled, gazing around the room. Then he realized he’d shouted out in their twin language, and, no one knew... They never used it in public.
And the worst part was it wasn’t even Azula’s rule. It was his. The little voice spoke again as the snake crawled into his pocket. “Sssscared.” Zuko agreed.
“You’re a parselmouth!” the professor said at last.
“What do you mean?” Azula demanded. “He just told me it wasn’t funny, and-”
Professor Longbottom frowned and peered at her. “You understood him?”
Azula spread her arms. “Of course I understood him, he-”
“You’re a parselmouth too?” Ty Lee squealed. “They’re really really rare, that’s so...” Then her face fell. “Oh.”
Zuko slumped into his seat as the whole class started talking. “Loud,” the little voice said from his pocket. Zuko put his book over his head and tried to sink into the table.
He just kept thinking, his mother was the Dark Lord’s most loyal follower.
~*~
A half an hour later, he and Azula sat in the Headmistress’s office, and she was talking about paternity tests and fertility spells.
