Summary: Rain is a terribly disruptive thing.

Laughing, Falling

The grass grew thick and long by the edge of the turtle-duck pond, cropping up between the stones that lined it.  Mai lay sprawled in it, head resting on Zuko's knee, idly turning a fan around and around between her fingers.  There was a half-written letter resting flat on a portable writing desk beside her with a donation to a war orphanage, and beside him lay the reports from the field commanders on the disarmament.  Both lay ignored as the clouds gathered heavy and black overhead, and the air hung humid and still around them.

The sound of his breathing steadied, faint beneath the hum and chirp of bright colored grasshopper-beetles and  butterfly-crickets as she listened to him drift into a doze.  The green, growing smells around her hung on the air and tickled her nose, and every so often, with a faint flash of guilt, she picked up the brush on her writing desk and set a few more words to the letter, before she let the sweet smells and the humming lure her back down to rest.

She unfurled the fan, trying to shift the still, sticky air.  When she felt generous, she waved it in front of Zuko's face and thought, maybe it wasn't generosity that prompted it, but the excuse it provided to just watch his face as he slept.  It was-  It was soothing, better to watch than the clouds rolling in overhead.  Off in the distance, she could see the rain falling over the city, and when she looked back at him, the grass puffing out from his face with each breath, she felt her face soften, felt an expression fighting its way onto it.  She lay her head back down against Zuko's knee and let her eyes close.

The first fat drops of rain landed on her bare arms and face, and her fingers twitched, but she didn't wake.  It was only when the lightning raced down the sky and the thunder cracked overhead, and the sky stopped leaking and just broke open that she jolted back to awareness, thrashing as Zuko squirmed awake under her head.  "What-"

"Rain," Zuko said, and she almost shoved her fan down his throat, before she realized he wasn't explaining, just...  "Rain, rain, rain..."

She grabbed the letter and shoved it into one of the portable desk's little drawers while Zuko threw himself over the reports and gathered them up.  Lightning flashed, lighting the garden up with instant flashes of color, and his hand gripped hers.  His hand gripped hers, and they ran for the palace, their clothes heavy and sticking to them, their hair coming undone under the weight of the water.

They slid through the palace hallways, wild and grinning, and into an empty room.  And it wasn't important that their wet clothes were thrown in a pile on the floor, or that the couch was narrow and uncomfortable under them.  All that mattered was that they were holding each other until they dried.

Summary: Azula always knew what to expect from her father.

Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Little Girls

She held the burned doll, and turned it over in her hands.  She could smell the burned hair and the cloth from her clothes as if she were a real person, but under that came the sweet smell of woodsmoke instead of cooked flesh, and Azula threw it away in disgust.

She bounced against the floor and split in two.

Her father stuck his head through the door at the noise, and Azula smiled at him an open smile.

She could see the pride in his eyes, the smug assurance that she was everything she was the best, there wasn't a trace of weakness within her.  He sat down in a chair near her bed, and she kissed his cheek.  "Oh, Azula, what have you done with the doll your uncle sent you, bad girl," but he was smiling a secret smile to her, and Azula knew what he meant.  And he knew she knew it.

She widened her eyes innocently and glanced down at her broken body.  "Nothing father, Zuko had a little accident, and he ruined my doll."

His smile deepened, brutal.  "Of course, Azula."  He watched without comment as her foot came down on the charred remains.

Summary: Wan Shi Tong always speaks the truth.

Warning (highlight to read): character death

Spoken True

The feathers brushed by his face.  "I'm not going to hurt you."  The air was hazy with falling sand, and the words reverberated inside the spirit's beak like a cave.

He looked... like a scholar again, a bird, not a feathered snake.  The library rumbled lower into the belly of the desert, and Zei smiled.  "You'll let me stay?"

The sand was up to the man's thighs, and he had to dust off the scrolls to keep reading.  "Don't worry about that," Wan Shi Tong murmured.  "You can't leave now."

Zei turned back to the scroll on his lap.  It was fascinating, about the ancient Water civilization that had covered much of the northern half of the continent.  He took his students out on a dig last summer and brought back piles of their pottery shards.  He could feel the sand rising around his neck, but he ignored it.

He spat sand out of his mouth and held the scroll up out of the way.  "Great One," he called out, and the spirit pulled the scroll out of his hands and watched him thrash.

"I said I wouldn't hurt you, little human, but I never said I would help you."

Summary: The Dragon of the West has a proposition for her, and Jin knows she doesn't have any choices left.

Author's note: I should probably warn for some misogynistic attitudes and language on the part of one of the characters.

Fallow

The bell over the door chimed, and as Jin walked in, she gathered her hair up and pushed it back over her shoulders. The combs and headdress pulled it tight, and the robe and slippers kept her steps shuffling and awkward. There were women she watched who looked like they were gliding, who made it look easy and elegant and made Jin feel ashamed.

Iroh, the old Fire Nation general, not Mushi the teamaker, smiled as she came in. He took her hand, and guided her to a chair, poured her tea, and kept smiling.

The guards at the gate to the upper ring had glared at her hard when she held up the pass, signed by the Earth King himself, and given to her by this man. Her mother had dressed her in her grandmother’s silks and put the combs in her hair when she saw it, and teased her about men so old they became teenagers again. Jin liked Mushi. She had wanted his nephew, but she liked him.

His face, and the way he had looked so frightened as she chased him, as she caught up with him and led him to the empty alley. And it had been so easy. All she did was kiss him again, and wrap one hand around his neck before he started to move with her.

She sipped the tea, and gulped gracelessly with her nerves. He put his hand on top of hers and she looked up at him, astonished to realize just how afraid she was. “I heard about the miscarriage,” he said, rubbing his thumb across her hand, kindly.

Here it came, her mother’s voice told her. He knows he has you. He knows no one else will take a slut whose womb can’t even hold a child.
“I wanted to ask your permission to tell my nephew. I think he would want to know.”

That she had been pregnant, Jin wondered, or that she had lost it and he was safe? “Yeah, sure, tell him. Whatever you want.”

“And I wanted to offer you a job.” He picked up his own teacup and took a sip. His hand stayed on hers, and it felt wrinkled and dry, like leaves. She looked down, and she could feel his eyes on her. “I’m not trying to get you into bed. It’s just, I’ve been a bit...” lonely. “Short staffed.”

Stay his Hand

Once upon a time, there was a young prince who had been kidnapped by his dastardly uncle, and the prince’s poor, desperate father had turned to a brave Navy commander to rescue him. This was the story Zhao told in every port city from there to the Fire Nation.

But Zuko stood, on the deck of Iroh’s stolen ship, staring back at him. After three years, there was Zhao, with an army at his back to capture the traitor Iroh who sought to free the Avatar, and return the kidnapped prince to his father and sister, and there was the prince, fighting to stay.

When the first fireball sped his way, Zhao didn’t believe it except for the heat pulsing as it passed. And when the boy had him on the ground, and his uncle urged him forward for the killing blow, Zhao closed his eyes.

But it never came.

The Scrolls

The ship darts through the water, throwing itself into the waves. “Hey captain!” The first mate hands the spyglass over and points to them, the moon and the waves on the sails shining in the sunlight.

He chuckles. “Good work. Men! Prepare to intercept!”

They swing on the ropes and slam down the planks, and scramble onto the Water Tribe ship. The tribesmen rush to meet them, weapons high, and the pirate captain turns to them. “This unpleasantness can all be avoided if you just hand over your valuables.”

The Water Tribe captain spits on the deck of his own ship and turns his head to an old, smiling man. The water around the ship goes suddenly horribly calm, and the pirate captain freezes.

One master waterbender and a couple of his students, and they were in the middle of the ocean, at his mercy.

A chill goes over all of them. A shudder runs through the whole crew, and the black water around them looks so, so cold. They wait for the wave to wash them away.

The arrow buries itself in the old master’s neck. The blood spurts, and he falls. The captain smiles. “Now, about your valuables...”

Toph’s feet hit the road.  The sun shines overhead, heating up the stones and the dust, and the space iron in her bracelet.

She just came from Aang and Katara at the Southern Air Temple.  Now she was on her way to Zuko in the Fire Nation.

It would have been a shorter trip if she went to Sokka instead, on Kyoshi island, but she wanted (she needed) the long journey.

Every journey had something wrong with it, boats, ice, all of Ba Sing Se.

Toph tells everybody that she has what she wants.  It isn’t true.  What she wants is for all of her friends to wander with her again, to ramble around the world together, just them, like they used to when there was war, and danger, and an entire nation out to get them.

But she can’t have that, could she?  And she really shouldn’t want it.

[livejournal.com profile] fanficforensics recently won the bidding on my [livejournal.com profile] help_japan offering of a 2000+ word fic, and after she prompted me, I sent her this drabble to tide her over and also to test out her likes and dislikes before I started her fic.  She wanted Zuko's ship captured by the Northern Water Tribe early in his exile.  The short story I wrote for her, "Holding This Breath", takes place several years earlier than this drabble.  This also fills my wildcard square on [livejournal.com profile] atlaland's recently finished bingo, giving me my blackout.

Releasing It

The day the Avatar came to the Northern Water Tribe, Zuko stepped out of his room, cell, it was his cell, he had to remember that, and nodded to the guards on either side of the door.  They used to bend the ice door to his room closed until he melted it open again.

He just kept walking.  He just couldn’t think in there, when that stupid place was actually starting to feel like home, like he belonged, and should stay.

For a moment, he contemplated shining his armor, and just coming down to the banquet, if they would let him wear his armor or even tell him where to find it.

Ever since the rumors had begun to filter through the merchants and sailors, to the young warriors and other people who fet safe gossiping around him, he had made plans and contingencies, and plotted escapes, and stuffed his head full of sea charts and maps of the ever-shifting underwater ice and stone tunnels, and how to steer the little Water Tribe kayaks and manage their strange outrigger sailing ships, and...  And now that the Avatar was there, his mind was just empty, like a rubber ball someone stuck a nail into, flat and airless.

The ice halls twisted and bent outwards, and he walked out onto the palace steps.  He let his legs give way, while the Avatar toyed with the ice under Pakku’s disapproving eye.  The Avatar didn’t even glance at him, and Zuko tried to imagine how he looked, small and harmless in his Water Tribe blue parka and shorn hair, sitting on the steps and blinking in the sunlight.

He had the kayak tucked away in one of the inlets and vials of cotton-poppy juice frozen in the ice under the nest of blankets and furs on the floor of his room to keep the Avatar asleep for the journey.  He knew where he could steal a boat small enough to sail by himself, close enough that he could get there in the kayak.  He had the barrels of fresh water, dried fruit, and jerky stashed nearby.  And he had the route to the Avatar’s room memorized.  He was going to do this.  He was.  It was going to happen.

And the sick feeling in the bottom of his stomach meant nothing.

And he couldn’t think about what it meant that in two and a half years, his father hadn’t ransomed him, or dashed off a treaty with his captors, or even attacked, done anything.  And he couldn’t think about the couldn’t and shouldn’t and what-are-you-thinking-they-will-be-so-mad.  All he should be thinking about was melting through every wall the Northern Water Tribe had and running home.

Summary: La grasps for both of them, which is why it hurts.

Glimmers

Tui scampered across the sky.  Her paper lantern bobbed beside her in one hand.  It flew above her head when she let herself fall down to the sea.  She held it aloft, dipping her feet in the water.

La couldn’t touch the lantern.  Tui couldn’t let it touch him, because the water would dissolve the paper and extinguish the flame.  She swung it just out of his reach with a grin.

He grabbed her arm and she grabbed his.  The moon was full and the lantern cover all the way off.  The light from it broke all over the waves.

Yue walks across the sky, and she doesn’t grab his arm, but she holds his hand.  He has to walk with her.  She won’t drag him.  She doesn’t hold a lantern.  She has a mirror, a disk made out of silver and glass.  She holds it to her chest most of the time, but sometimes, she holds it out to him.

She lets him touch the mirror, those times, but it only reflects the light.  It has none of its own.  His fingers scrape across it.

The ocean water reflects the light too.

The Final Score

The music wound down, and Neal could feel her shaking.  She lowered herself down onto the sofa and leaned back against the cushions, eyes closing as he pulled the needle up off the record and slid it back into its sheath.  She grabbed his hand as he passed and pulled it to her chest, and gracefully, spinning on his heel as if they were still dancing, he let her pull him down beside her.  Together, they sat in the quiet gloom.  Her head slid down to rest on his shoulder, and his fingers ran their way through her stiff, hairsprayed hair.

“I’m not some brainless old lady, you know.”  The tight misery still weighed in her voice, thick and heavy.

His hand in her hair froze.  “Yeah, I know.”

“In all that time we ran jobs together, Byron, Ford and I, I’m the only one who never went down for anything.  Ford went down, Byron went down, but I-”  Her voice broke, and she shivered a little, and he didn’t look down terrified that there might be tears on her face, washing away her polish.  “I knew he was running something.  I just kept waiting for him to bring me in, and I- I guess I made it easy for him.”

“I know,” he whispered, wishing he could take away the humiliation and cold rush of shame away from her.

“Were you worried for me?”  She tried to summon forth a smile.  “Is that why you brought in Peter?”

“No.”  Neal let his hand run through her hair again and thought about the way she had looked at Ford, like all of the best times of her life were coming back, and how she might not need him around anymore to remind her what it was like being in the game.  He thought about how even if she let him stay, she could always be the one to go to prison this time, for the last big score, about how even if he told no one, there was always Peter, and Diana, and Jones, and thousands of clever people behind them.  He thought about what Diana had accused him of when he gave her the print, and about the motel Peter had dropped him off in when he first got out of prison, and for a few seconds, he was able not to care that it was cruel and selfish, because he had been just a little afraid.  “It wasn’t about that.”

She tipped her head up and looked into his face.  Her mouth twisted into a weird, painful smirk, confidant and unhappy all at once.  She laughed a little, tiredly.  “Oh good.”

Neal squeezed her shoulders.  Peter thought he should be afraid of becoming Ford, alone, trapped, selfish and cruel, and he tried to decide if he was more afraid of that, or of becoming June, glittering, brilliant, and alone, her old comrades seeing her as just another mark.  He squeezed her shoulders again and listened to her breathe.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she thinks she can see burning piles of bodies and trash between them.  She thinks she can hear screams on the wind.

She smiles when the Mechanist’s son waves her over, and ladles noodles into her bowl.  They’re clustered in groups among the statues, two of her daughters on the edge of the fountain, another one sitting on the shoulders of a stone monk.  Yinbi takes the bowl, shaking her head.

Empty, Closed.

The cages were empty, their doors thrown open.  Light poured down yellow and muted from the skylights, and dust swirled on the air, insubstantial in the gloom.  The pumps had ground to a halt a long time ago, and the air inside was as humid as it was anywhere else on the islands, hot, heavy, and unmoving on her skin.

Rust clung to the bars and ate away at the chains hanging down from the ceiling like vines.  Ty Zhi put her hand on the bars, and felt the rust scratch cold against her palm.  Her breath shuddered in her chest.  The place smelled old, felt ancient, like something out of some scroll tucked away in a library corner.

Not like something held over her head since she was born.  Not like someplace that made her father shout at her when he saw her twisting in the air outside the house.  It was the first time her father yelled at her.  It was the first time her mother didn’t soothe her when she cried.  Not like someplace real.

Her mother sat her down and ran her Fire Nation nails through her daughter’s hair, and held her in her Fire Nation arms.  She told Ty Zhi about the Southern waterbenders in their prison, and about the massacre of the Air Nomads, and told her if she was lucky, the Fire Nation would just kill her.

Ty Zhi raised her hand and swirled it in the air.  The air rose up and spun, dragging the dust, rust, and rot around and around.  She grinned wide and wild, hair pulling out of her braid, air whipping his face.  It was beautiful, and she felt so strong and so brave doing it there, bending there.

And then she felt very silly, and very small.

Summary: Ty Bao is gracious in defeat.

Long Way Down

Ty Bao sat on the edge of the platform and swung her feet in the empty sky.  One-handed, she twirled the glider, letting it open, and the pink wings flutter on the breeze, and letting lit close again.  Against the clouds, a tiny speck rode the winds.  She spun the glider open again and dropped off the edge.

The air currents held her up, and she sliced through them, spinning them around herself.  Every breath called the air.  Every movement of the air felt like it was breathing with her, calling her the way she was calling it.  It played with her like a friend.

As she got closer, the speck against the clouds resolved itself into a boy.  She took one hand off her glider and crooked her finger at him.  His eyes lit up behind his goggles.  “Hey!” he shouted over the sound of all the air.

“Hey back!” she yelled.  “You coming in?  They have dinner ready.”

Teo laughed and flitted through the air, letting the wind buffet him up and down, and back and forth, not like an airbender.  He rolled to a stop on the platform as her feet touched down.  “Any idea what we’re having?”

She didn’t answer.  She looked back at the sky.  “I couldn’t do it.”

“What?” he asked, pushing his goggles up.

“Fly like that.”

“Are you kidding?  You’re way better than-”

Hands to Rock Cradles

“Shh,” Ty Hei murmured.  “You’re part of something important, you know.  You were born into something really special.”  She did her best to keep her words as conversational as possible, but the tense little undercurrent of fear kept finding its way in.  The baby that lay settled in her arms over the gentle, slowly returning rise of her belly bumped his fat little fists against the air  and whined furiously reflecting her agitation.

Her father had told her- her mother had told her, her mother who knew what it was like to be pulled into someone else’s secret and have it become hers.  They told her to fall in love with someone whose family worked for theirs, someone from the island, from their personal family fief, someone who would lose everything if he told.

She had asked if it was love and trust if she were holding all the cards.

It was love, and romance for her, and she could trust Xian with her life.  She could.  But there were children now.  Her mother had told her about that too.  Now Ty Hei wished she were holding all the cards.

“You’re part of something important,” she whispered, ruffling her daughter’s hair, breathing deeply, and letting herself sink into the ritual.  Someday, when her girl was older, she would tell her what she was born into, why she could feel the air inside her, not just on her skin, someday when her girl was older, and her baby boy, and the baby inside her were all older.  Old enough not to tell their friends, or their father, old enough to be safe, more safe than she had to be.  “You were born into something really special.”

The three-year-old’s voice, sleepy and indistinct, followed Ty Hei out the door.  “I know, mom!”

Author's Note: I've been sitting on this for a while.  I actually wrote this as a sample drabble for [livejournal.com profile] happiestwhen when I was feeling out what they wanted for their [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan  fic.  As such, this drabble is meant to be a companion to the resulting fic, Drink it Down

Thin, Unbroken, Green

Kyoshi Island didn’t have mothers.  Kyoshi Island had sisters, in a thin, unbroken green line.

Suki washed the blood off her mother’s sister’s daughter’s armor and laced it around her own body.  It gapped and pinched and fit her cousin’s body not her own.  But the warriors would teach her how to fix that.

She painted her face.  It’s soft and sticky, made from egg shells, animal fat, and soot, and the tiny red insects that only lived on Kyoshi Island, and it sat heavy on her face.  Strange.  She always thought it would be hard like porcelain.  She had been afraid it would crack.

The pots of face paint had come to her father’s house along with the armor.  Koko asked what she would have done if their mother’s sister’s daughter hadn’t died, but Suki didn’t have to answer.  There was always one warrior dying.  There was always a new one growing up.

She passed her mother’s sister’s daughter on the way to the dojo.  The woman wore the blue tunic and wide pants of a man or a child again, her hair unbound, her face unpainted.  She gave Suki a smile.  “First day?”

Suki shuddered, and swore to herself that when she died on the battlefield there would be no one-legged, still talking body for her sisters to bring home.

The other Warriors saluted her with their fans as she came in, their faces frozen beneath the forbidding mask of their makeup.

Suki had painted fans at home, pretty delicate things she had first learned with.  But the fans she held now were fans that broke fire.  These were fans that cut off heads.

~*~

Kyoshi Island didn’t have mothers.  Kyoshi Island had sisters, in a thin, unbroken green line.

A woman whose daughters could remember her when they were grown was either very lucky, or a coward.  A woman who made it to see her daughters become warriors was probably both.

There were pirates, and Fire Navy ships, and extortionate Earth Kingdom soldiers, and raiders from Chen.  There were warlords, and chiefs, and village murderers.

But the war was over.  Water Tribe ships guarded their shores.  The Fire Navy stayed within their own waters.  The Earth Kingdom soldiers had been sent home.

For a hundred years, no Kyoshi Warrior had ever retired.

There was a rush, a fear, a bond.  No one could ever mean as much as a sister.  Nothing could mean as much as a battle.  Kyoshi Warriors drank, and sang, and lived it up in a desperate need to do as much as possible before they fell.

There were women all over the world who expected to see their grandchildren grow up.

Suki was tired.

Summary: Even when they're alone, none of them talk about it, but it's nice to be around people who know.

Split the Sky

In the other nations, there were good archers, talented archers, who could feel the wind, and know just where to aim to hit what they needed hit, so long as the wind didn’t change.  And there were archers in other nations who seemed to know how the wind would move once the arrows left their bows.

But people swore the Yu Yan arrows turned corners and followed their prey, swore they couldn’t miss, or swore that their archers could call their name, and the arrows would come back.  People swore they had seen it.

Ty Shin let loose her bowstring and felt the hiss of the feathers dragging between her fingers as the feather flew.  She could feel the wind springing away from the arrow tip.  The air rolled around it, and Ty Shin felt like she was rolling with it, like she was flying, like she was a kid again, and jumping off, knowing she wouldn’t touch the ground until she wanted to.  Lieng Ai patted her shoulder, and smiled at his oldest and best cousin.  “Don’t worry,” he whispered.  “Everybody else feels it too.”

It felt like touching their cage walls when the arrows flew, but they couldn’t stop, because it was the closest to freedom they ever got.  They couldn’t stop, even if it felt like betrayal, even when it was betrayal.

Archers in the other nations said the Yu Yans had magic, that their arrows would do anything for them but the magic would leave if the arrows ever killed.  But the arrows were just wood, feather, and stone, at the mercy of the wind.  They weren’t special.  Ty Shin loosed another.

Summary: In families, everyone has a job.

The Work of Sisters

Ty Un arrayed her dolls on her bed and watched suspiciously as the maids cleaned the shelves and tables where they had been.  One of her dolls didn’t have any hands anymore.  One had a hole where her nose had been.  She straitened robes, and smoothed hair, and waited for the maids to leave.

And when they did, she put her dolls back in their places, walked out, and shut the door behind her.

The maids didn’t go into Ty Lee’s rooms.  No one did anymore.  The dust hung thick on the floor, bed, and tables.

Ty Un was supposed to be the good daughter, the one who never bent, and never made trouble for her family.  The one who played with dolls and smiled, and didn’t drink.

They were all good daughters, her parents said, but it was Ty Un’s job.

She closed the door.  She slammed the shutters.  She raised her hands and the dust flew around her in waves and eddies.  It was Ty Un’s job plan her trouble so it was out of sight.

Ty Lee was gone, and she wasn’t coming back until she wanted to.  So it was Ty Un’s job now to play.

They gave her own ship not long afterwards.  She stood on the bridge and drank tea from a hipflask.  Her new crew drank saki.  Ty Yan used to drink saki.  And they told her she got off light.

She felt light.  Sometimes she felt so light she thought she could walk off the ship and over the water and never touch the waves.

Ty Yan drank more tea.  The saki numbed that.  It weighed her down until she couldn’t feel the air on her skin.

The Northern Water Tribe drew closer.  Ty Yan drew closer to it, but she couldn’t feel herself move.  She was trying so hard to stay still.  Zhao’s fleet steamed on, her ship, crowded in with the rest.  She breathed the coal smoke.  It wasn’t air.

She didn’t see what was so bad about sailing with the Banished Prince, or how this was any better.

~*~

Ty Yan grabbed onto the scraps of wood bobbing on the water.  The cold water burned on her skin, and she watched heads disappear under the water all around her waiting for her turn.  The Water Tribe’s spirit monster stormed away, and she heaved a sigh, and heaved up seawater, and heaved at the sight of the bodies just under the waves.

She stripped off her armor and fished a canvas tarp out of the surf and wrapped it around herself, but it was wetter than she.  And she shivered.

The wind howled all around, and she couldn’t let herself blow it wall away.  She still...

~*~

She floated south with the flotsam to a colony with a bar, and drank.  Everyone expected to see sailors drink.  And she saw her crew vanishing into the water, and she saw her people burning alive, and she felt the air whirling all around her.

And she felt heavy.

Ty Yan drank until the air stopped whirling, but they didn’t stop burning, and they didn’t stop sinking below the waves.

Summary: Seeing isn't believing.

Rising Steam

“Come on, come on!” he groaned at his freedom fighters. “They’ll be here soon.” She left him hanging from the tree like a lemon-plum, waiting for the Fire Nation soldiers to cut him down. He clenched his hands into fists, his fingers numb with cold from the ice all around them.

Smellerbee slammed the curved head of Jet’s sword into the ice over his chest in frustration. It bounced off, vibrating in her hand with the blow. “Calm down, Jet! We’re going as fast as we can.”

He growled and banged his head back against the tree. “Then just get out of here!” He could hear the soldiers clanking closer.

“Jet-”

“Leave!” he hissed, and the ice hissed off him, sizzling off his skin. He fell to the ground. The steam curled in the air above him. He could taste the metalic heat on his tongue, and feel the crackle of sparks as they died.

His freedom fighters backed away. Jet’s eyeballs strained against the confines of his skull. “That wasn’t- I’m not-”

He wasn’t. He never had been. This was just something that happened sometimes. It didn’t mean anything.

They kept backing away.

He watched them slip into the shadows under the trees and picked himself up.

~*~

He felt a tap on his shoulder, and he spun around, reaching for his hook swords, but he didn’t have them.

Longshot gazed at him somberly when Jet. Jet saw him and heaved a sigh. He wasn’t all alone. Longshot glanced down at Smellerbee, holding up the swords. He took them and hung them from his belt. “Thanks.”

His eyes roved over the empty tree houses. His freedom fighters weren’t there, to listen to him, or fight him. They were just... gone.

“They didn’t see what they thought they saw,” Smellerbee said sharply.

Longshot put his hand on Jet’s shoulder.

Jet nodded. “They didn’t.” He could still taste the sparks.

~*~

Jet slung a sack over his shoulder and grabbed the treehouse ladder. “Let’s go.”

Smellerbee sheathed her dagger. “Where?”

“Ba Sing Se.” Where everyone else running from the Fire Nation was going.

Fires Inside

They burn deep under Wu’s feet the night she walkes into the village.  She is young and the green pinches and feels all wrong on her body.  Yesterday, she followed the shifting fires under the rock to the village and glimpsed the volcano, still and serene, through the trees.

And when she went to the captain, he told her what happened to a bunch of Earth Kingdom commoners wasn’t their responsibility.  She thought that was why they’re conquering the Earth Kingdom, to make things like that their responsibility.

She walks into the center of town and shouts.  She knows she sounds crazy, talking about fire, lava and ash raining from the sky.

But they listen.  And they leave.

~*~

She’s fifteen, and they call her Aunt.  They come to her with questions about who they’re going to marry, and where they should farm.  They ask about grandchildren’s names, and sick animals, and whether it will rain.  So she buys scrolls from passing traders about animal husbandry, medicine, weather, farming, and everything she knows nothing about.  She learns everybody’s names and the names of their ancestors.  And she makes things up.

And waits for the fire in the mountain to awaken again.

Summary: Everything changes after the war.

What Can’t Change

They both went, but they never went together.  When they walked the road to the hospital, they were always alone, even when it was full of people.  And they always walked.  Zuko and Mai couldn’t be Firelord and Fire Lady, not for Azula.

They never went together, but Zuko knew the look Mai got, deep in the back of her eyes when she had been there.  They always held each other afterwards.  They always needed to be held.  Mai held Zuko while he tried not to cry, her face still and stuck, masklike and hard.  Zuko held Mai while she couldn’t cry, and he wished he could cry for her, and that it would somehow make her stop hurting.

They never went together; they couldn’t be together, not for Azula.  But they had to be together afterwards, for Zuko and Mai.

They never went together, but sometimes Azula still saw them together, and those were the hardest days of all.  On those days, Azula cried.

They never went together, and Mai sometimes forgot they were.  She remembered when she had first met Azula, and they had been so scared, and unable to show it.  Azula couldn’t stop showing it anymore.

The Dust and the Silence

The water sloshed over the edge of the bucket as Jin drew it carefully out of the public well.  High apartment walls rose up around her, hemming her in.  The well stood in a patch of sunlight between the shadows, and the summer heat beat down, bringing sweat up to bead on her forehead and under her robe.  The cloth stuck to her body and her hair sank low and wet into her eyes.

An arm dropped itself around over her shoulders.  The fingers attached to it swept down across her breasts.  She dropped the bucket.  “Hey, baby, come with...”

Jin couldn’t even hear the words.  The water splashed over her arms and stomach.  The cold only made the arm around her burn more.  She flinched away from both.

She lowered her bucket on its rope back into the well, ducking the Fire Nation Soldier’s arm.

She had to say yes.

There were still Dai Li hiding just behind the roof beams.

She never would have thought that defeat would taste the same as peace.

Summary: They are different.

Someone Else

Zuko knew how to wield dual swords, even if he didn’t let anyone else know.

The Blue Spirit didn’t wield swords.  The swords were part of his body and being.  Sometimes the spirit sheathed them and took his hands off of them, but they were always part of him.

Even when they hung on Zuko’s wall.

Zuko could breathe life into fire.  He was the prince of Fire.  Fire was life, and strength, hope and pride.  It was his.

The Blue Spirit couldn’t bend.  He was a being of shadows.  Fire dispelled him.  Fire was death, and weakness, fear and shame.  It doesn’t belong to him.

The Blue Spirit never spoke.  He didn’t need to.  He had swords, and skills to speak instead.  He could go anywhere, and then disappear again.

The Blue Spirit had serenity and patience instead of Zuko’s endless frustration.

While Zuko never smiled, the spirit’s face was always grinning.

The Blue Spirit wore Zuko’s clothes, held his swords, and walked his floors.

But the Blue Spirit was not Zuko.

Zuko held the mask and gazed back into its empty eyeholes.  He turned the mask over in his hands and replaced its hollow eyes with his own.

So Many Ways

After the birth, while her thighs were still bloody, the royal physician lay the baby in Mai’s shaking arms.  She slumped against the pillows and tried not to clench her hands and press her new daughter to her, to keep her safe from everything else.

Because she knew that would leave bruises all over her new, red skin.

She clenched her jaw instead, and felt something clench deep inside.

Zuko, face yellow-gray with worry, lowered himself down to perch tentatively beside her on the bed.  Mai’s hand clutched his so hard her nails sank into his flesh and raised up little drops of blood.  She stared at him in desperation.  Her voice was neutral.  Her voice was always neutral.  “Do you want to hold her?”

When he shook his head, he trembled so hard, the movements looked like spasms.  “No.”  She had seen him scared.  She had seen him scared so many times, but not like he was when he looked at the tiny human in her arms, not the wrenching, freezing terror and guilt radiating off him as he tried to tear his eyes away from their daughter.

He wanted to shove her away, send her away.  Far away so that he couldn’t hurt her.  His scar ached, and he felt the air around him crushing in on him.

All they could do was look at each other.  Neither one of them could speak.  They looked at each other instead of their child and tried not to remember anything.

The others trickled out of the teashop in twos and threes until Mai sat alone at the table with her bowl of noodles.  Even Zuko.  She heaved a bored sigh.

“You gonna eat that?”

Mai started in surprise.  The Avatar’s earthbender put her feet up on the table and leaned back in her chair until it almost touched Mai’s, pointing behind her to Mai’s bowl of noodles without looking.

Not that there was any point to her looking, Mai reasoned.  She lifted up the bowl absently before her eyes fell on the table in front of the girl.  Sitting back down, Mai pulled one of the noodles out of the bowl with her lips and drew it into her mouth with a long, careful slurp.  Mai didn’t slurp.  “You already have two bowls of noodles in front of you.”

The earthbender girl smirked and picked up one of the bowls.  “Yeah, not like I don’t want more after I’m done.”  She packed her mouth full and burped, dropping the bowl nonchalantly onto a letter in front of her on the table.

Mai glanced down at it.  “Want me to read that for you?”

“No,” Toph sneered down at it.

Mai shrugged.

“Parents suck.”  The earthbender’s voice cut through the stretching silence.

Mai shrugged again and slurped down another noodle.

“I didn’t think you made noise when you ate.”

“No.”

She smiled widely, leaning back in her chair far enough to rest her head on Mai’s shoulder. “Your parents as bad as mine?”

Mai glanced at the ceiling.

Merit

The guards left as soon as Iroh waved them away.  When Iroh had been on the other side of the bars, the guards had stayed.

Iroh sank to the floor and folded his legs.  “I thought you should know Azula’s doing better.”

“Not screaming for her mother anymore?” Ozai sneered.

“She never screamed for Ursa.  She screamed at Ursa.  She screamed for you.”

Ozai turned to face the wall.

“Her doctors could bring her to visit if you promised to be nice.  She would like that.”

Ozai flinched.

Iroh pushed the teacup he brought through the bars.  “You know, I would have thought you would have learned something from our father, but you treated your children the same way he treated us.”

Throwing himself at the bars, Ozai kicked the teacup into his brother’s face, hands clenching on the iron.  “I did everything different!” he howled.  “I swore I’d never treat any my children differently just because one was born first!  They’d have to earn-”

Iroh thought about his nephew waiting for him by the turtle-duck pond and the niece he’d just visited, and wondered how the man could choose.

Summary: Xiangzhi loves funerals.

The Name Collector

He always arrived during funerals.

The girl’s family sobbed, and moaned, and carried on, calling out her name to themselves as he stepped into the village square, head bowed.  One old man grabbed his arm and dragged him over to the open grave.

“You must be a gift from the spirits,” the man exclaimed, “To come when you did.  My poor brother and his wife, could you say a blessing over my niece’s grave?”

Xiangzhi nodded and smoothed down his yellow and orange robes.  When he began to chant, everyone stopped crying to look at him.  An Air Nomad monk at the poor girl’s funeral.  She just died in her sleep, isn’t that sad?

She’d gone easily.  Her pillow pressed down on her face, over her nose and mouth, and she couldn’t even raise the air to scream.

Xiangzhi hid his smile.

The funeral was such a big deal.  He always picked the biggest house in town, the one where the daughters were bound to have their own rooms, and he could be alone.  It was so easy to get away when he didn’t have to leave footprints.  They made it so easy.

And it was so easy to wait in the woods until the wailing started and the grave was dug.

The girl’s spirit squirmed under his hands as he pinned her between them and forced her into her grave, and her mother moaned her daughter’s name again and again.  Xiangzhi let the name fall into his mind, satisfied.

Summary: Living in hiding takes its toll.

The Scariest Day

The scariest day of his life was the day he told his wife what he was. She was six months pregnant, and he should have told her on their wedding night, but he was a coward. He knew he was a coward. He came from a family of cowards.

That day, she screamed and raged and he waited for the soldiers to come to their door to kill him. But she didn’t tell.

Sometimes, after she let her hair down in the evenings, and before she braided it back up for bed, he bent a breeze to play with it as he ran his fingers through, and she would laugh at him.

They had children together. Ty Hei was only the first. There was honor in keeping his family safe.

The scariest day of his life was the day he told his wife what he was until the scariest day became the day he sent Ty Lee off to school.

The rest of his children he could tutor, but Ty Lee was only a year older than Princess Azula, and people would be suspicious if he didn’t send her hoping they’d become friends and win their family favor. No one could ever be suspicious of them.

It should have been Ty Un, who liked to liked to collect dolls and crack jokes, and could keep her feet on the ground. She would have bored the Princess. Boring was good. Boring was safe, and kept the family safe.

Ty Lee bent like she breathed, and her feet never touched the ground.

But Ty Lee turned out to be the best of anyone at hiding it. She bent and fought at the Princess’ side and no one ever noticed, because she was Ty Lee.

They taught all of their children to fight. Ty Yan even joined the navy. The day she did, he and his wife heaved a sigh of relief. No one would expect to find an airbender in the Fire Navy, any more than they expected to find them among the Fire Nation nobility.

He taught all of his children to hide as he had been taught to hide. He taught them to smile, and laugh, and play stupid, and keep the conversation on everybody else. It kept them safe. It kept them all alive. And he knew how much they must hate it.

His mother’s father’s mother had passed down what she could to her children, who passed it down to theirs. Surrounded by people who wanted them dead, the only way to keep a little bit of their history alive was to keep it secret and teach their children. There was honor in keeping their people alive.

When the war ended, it was hard to remember there was honor in speaking.

The scariest day of his life was the day he sent Ty Lee off to school until the scariest day became the day he told the world what he was and watched his children learn to fly.

As the Earth King speaks, Iroh drinks his tea and wonders if this is what the Dai Li felt.

Wangji’s mother is Earth. Her mama is strong and steady, and steadfast as stone.

Wangji’s brothers and sisters are Earth. They have green eyes, and slow tempers, and they grew up with dirt on their hands.

Wangji’s stepfather is Earth. He has big hands and wide shoulders that Wangji and all of her siblings rode around on in turn.

Wangji threw sparks around her crib as a baby. When he was feeling cruel, her big brother Keqin would tell her all about how that made her mother cry, and rage, about how Wangji wasn’t her stepfather’s but that Fire soldier who had-

Everybody was so happy when the war ended and the Fire Nation soldiers left and the Earth Kingdom ones came back. Wangji too. She’s not happy anymore.

When they came back, they put Wangji in a wagon. They wouldn’t let her family come, so her mama, and papa, and all her brothers and sisters followed along side and held her hands until the soldiers drove them away. There were other mothers fathers, stepfathers, stepmothers, brothers, and sisters following too, for the other kids, until the soldiers drove them away.

When they put her on the wagon, she was wearing green, a jeogori and chima her mama sewed her. They made her change into something red, but she didn’t own anything red. She still doesn’t. The scratchy thing they gave her is the brown color of dry blood.

She’s the oldest kid in the cart from her town; they keep handing her the babies, but she’s the baby of her family, and she’s never been near any other kind of baby before. But the Fire Nation colonists in the cart with them won’t have anything to do with them; they say the kids are Earth Kingdom, and they won’t admit they lost the war, and Haizi’s crying and she can’t do anything.

She’s thirteen. Everybody says that’s the same age as the Avatar. She hates him.

Tomorrow she’s going to get on a big metal ship, and everything left of what she knows will be gone.

She doesn’t think anyone in the Fire Nation will want anything to do with them any more than the Fire Nation colonists do.

There won’t be anyone waiting for her.

She doesn’t bend anymore. It aches and aches, and calls to her, but she won’t bend like they bend.

She wears white, red, and black facepaint, like one of the wooden dolls Ty Un used to keep in Ty Lee’s room, before she left with Azula.

Ty Un probably still keeps her dolls there.  They probably reach all the way to the ceiling by now.

Every time she touches her face, her skin shows through under the paint, and she has to fix it.

Airbender tatoos don’t smear.

Ty Lee pulls the fan back the way the other Kyoshi warriors showed her, but she doesn’t thrust it forward.  She sweeps it out, up, and back, feeling the eddies of air it moves.

Why would Earth Kingdom warriors fight with fans anyway?  It makes no sense.

How was Ty Lee supposed to know most people couldn’t send people flying across the room without their fans even touching them, no matter how hard they trained?  How was she supposed to know the air didn’t help other people when they jumped?

Suki’s probably already finished talking to Sokka.  She’s probably already writing a letter to Aang.

This isn’t...

“We’re not firebenders.”  Because they finished it together.

“Alright, fine.  Lo, you’re banished.”  it didn’t matter which of the twins she was pointing to.  “Li, you can stay.”  They were both going to be leaving.

~*~

“But what choice do I have?” Azula howled.  No!  She wasn’t going to think about Mai and Ty Lee.  She refused to think about the ones who’d already left.  “Trust is for fools. Fear is the only reliable way. Even you fear me!”

“No. I love you, Azula.”  Her mother’s reflection gave her the saddest look.  Why did she have to look at her like that?  “I do.”

Her hand latched onto the brush.  She wasn’t crying.  She wasn’t crying!  The tears splashed on the top of her table.  Her mother was talking to her, and she was already gone.

Azula roared.  Her hand opened.  The brush slammed into the glass.  The air broke apart, and from the ruined pieces on the floor, her mother blinked back at her.  Why wasn’t she leaving?  Wasn’t she already gone?

Summary: The Day of Black Sun is hard on them both.

Eclipse

Yue dragged herself across the sky.  She clutched her moon disk hard enough in her hands to leave marks on her spirit-flesh, because she had to reassure herself that it was there, that it was real, because it was the new moon, and even she didn’t get to see it.  It was heavy.  The climb sapped her strength and the air clung to her, pulling her down.

She could let go of her moon disk.  It would hang in the air, invisible.  No one would notice it.

But she couldn’t let it go, because she was still trying to reassure herself it was there.

“Agni,” she mumbled, waving her hand weakly.

He smiled at her with a sort of brittle stoicism.  As he caught her hand, her lips twitched up to match.  “I’ve done this before you know,” he assured her, squeezing his hand.

“Yes.”  She pinned the moon disk under her arm.  “Don’t worry, I know.”  Glancing down at the people below, her people and others, preparing to fight his, she swallowed, and stepped between them and her brother.

He closed his eyes.  The weight fell off him as black bled onto her moon disk and her dress.  For eight minutes, her hair would be black for the first time since she was born.  His round, comfortable form shrank, the skin hanging off him.  His hair hung limp.  He stumbled.

She caught him.  “I wouldn’t have fallen,” he remarked.

“I know.”    She clung to him.  He clung to her.  She was used to this.  It came every month.  But for him, the sun was always shining somewhere.  If it was winter somewhere, it was summer somewhere else.  And she felt better than he looked like he did anyway.  “Do you want to lean on me until the eclipse passes?”  She wondered if Tui felt like he did when she died.  He looked like he was about to die.

He sank against her side, and she let herself lean against him, too.  She could see her moon disk vanishing again as she glided past him, and as he looked more like himself again, she turned away and slunk the rest of the way through the sky.

She wondered how the battle went.  She should look.

Summary: The first new moon.

Uncharted

Yue rose early, pale and lusterless in the morning sky.  “Hello Agni,” she greeted, bowing her head.

Beaming, he waved to her as she climbed higher.  Her hands trailed though the air, pulling the ocean waters after them, and La reached his hand up to her, but she didn’t take it.

He wanted Tui.  She couldn’t be Tui.

When she came close enough, Agni took her hands and pulled her into an embrace.  “You feel so thin,” he whispered.

She leaned against him, letting his short, round body bear her weight for a while, her head against his pudgy arm.  “Is something wrong with me?”

He shook his head and tucked her braids behind her ears.  His eyes took on a faraway look.  “Tui always had a hard time just before the new moon too.”

Yue let go abruptly.  “I’m sorry,” she wanted to say.

She hadn’t realized she had spoken it aloud until Agni laid his hand over hers.  “What for?”

“You must miss your sister terribly,” she murmured.

Agni rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb.  “Your sister too.”  Smiling sadly, Yue shook her head, and let him keep holding her hand.  After a moment, he let go and stood back, dangling in the air in front of her.  “Do you want me to help you through the sky?”

She felt horribly weak nodding, but her head bobbed without her permission.  He lifted her and her sliver of moon into his arms and carried her through the sky, letting the sun disk drift along behind them.  “Was-”  she stopped talking, and looked away.  “Was Tui your real sister, or was she your sister like I’m your sister?”

His brow furrowed, puzzled.  “You’re my real sister.”

“No, I mean, did you have the same parents?”

“We don’t have parents.”  He closed his eyes as she looked back to him.  “But I’m the Sun, and she was the Moon, so she was my sister.”

Yue wished he would smile. His round face was made for it.  She wished she could make him smile.

“I’ve never missed anyone before.  She’s the first of us to die.  I...”  He closed his eyes again and fought back tears.  “I didn’t even know we could.”

A piece of Yue was circling La in the pool at the spirit oasis, frail, and living, and vulnerable.  She brushed her hand against her brother’s cheek.

Summary: Toph's doing great.

Keep Talking

“You’re doing great!” Sokka called to her.  “Just- follow- the- sound- of- my- voice!”

Toph slid across the ice.  There was nothing around her, nothing that she could feel.  she couldn’t feel the ice ahead of her, just trust that it would be there.  It had to be there.

She couldn’t feel the ice in front of her, but she could feel the ice under her, and how slick it was with water, and how her feet skidded, and how her stomach dropped out of her.  The water lapped against the bridge.  The water was so close.

Out on the ice, her parents were right.  she was tiny, and blind, and helpless and-

Please keep talking, she barely kept herself from screaming.  I don’t care what you say, just pleasepleaseplease Keep talking, keep talking, keeptalking, keeptalkingkeeptalkingkeeptalking KEEP TALKING!

“It’s hard to ignore,” she snapped back instead.

Then the ice broke.

Summary: People cross into and out of their elements all the time.

Ten Thousand Things

Playing another note on his reed flute, Aang grinned around the mouthpiece as another prairie dog popped out of its hole and echoed the note.  “I’m putting an orchestra together!”  He looked up at his friends.

“Orchestra, huh?” Sokka muttered.  “Well la dee da.”  But it didn’t matter, because Aang was in his element.

Toph crossed her arms.  “I say you guys go ahead without me.”

Katara rounded on her.  “You got something against libraries?”

“I’ve held books before, and I gotta tell you, they don’t exactly do it for me,” she sneered.  She didn’t like being out of her element.

~*~

“So, you like flyin’?” Toph drawled.  Appa scratched his ear.  Toph was out of her element anyway.

~*~

“I have an authentic waterbending scroll.” Katara smiled eagerly.

“Oh…” Wan Shi Tong murmured covetously.  “These illustrations are quite stylish.”  As he swept his wing over the scroll and it vanished into his collection, Katara bowed to him, still smiling.  She was in her element.

~*~

The water tribe boy dangled from the rope.  “Professor, let’s go!”

Zei picked his head up from the scroll in his hands, disregarding the sand pouring down around him.  He was in his element.

~*~

“Your waterbending won’t do you much good here,” the knowledge spirit sneered.  “I’ve studied Northern Water Style, Southern Water Style, even Foggy Swamp Style.”  He raised his head and opened his beak.

Sokka waited to let go of Aang and the glider until he was right above Wan Shi Tong.  The book in his fist crashed hard into the knowledge spirit’s head.  “That’s called Sokka style,” he crowed, beating the air with his fist.  “Learn it!”  As he ran, he was in his element.

~*~

Wan Shi Tong drifted out of consciousness, his knowledge flitting away from him.  He was out of his element.

Adrift

The air in front of him burned.

Zuko reached up and swatted the fire blast away, circling his arm back to shield himself.  He kept his body tight as he twisted though the air and only wobbled a little when he landed.  A smile tried its best to yank his lips up.  “So?”

“Do it again.”

“What!” he slammed his hands down on his uncle’s table.  “But I detected every fire blast!”

“And your form was still weak, Prince Zuko.  Do it again.”

“Teach me the next form!”

Iroh put his hand over Zuko’s and squeezed, proud.  “Do it again.”

Alone

When his own ship had rolled under his feet, he hadn’t needed the cane.  He’d been trapped there with every corridor and every room for years and years and years, and they never changed.

The road didn’t roll, and he didn’t know where it went.

But there was boy holding his hand.  His hand shifted against the boy’s uneasily and he longed to grab for his cane.

“No one can sneak up on us.”

Zuko snickered.  “No kidding.”

He let the boy lead him to his parents and didn’t yank his hand away.

It would be rude.

He felt helpless.

Aloft

“I hate it too.”

When Zuko didn’t answer, Toph poked him hard between the ribs.  “What?”

“Flying.”  With every little jolt, his stomach bounced up into his mouth.  “First time I was up here and couldn’t see anything...”

“I’m fine.”

He wanted to tell her to shut up; he couldn’t see on the ground either.  She should stop-  “Oh.”  He flushed.

He tried not to remember the air whistling past his ears as he missed Azula’s airship.  “It’s worse when I don’t know where the ground stops.”  She punched him in the arm, but it quickly turned into a hug.

The Will of a God

“I thought I told you if you ever slept with a man who could not beat you in fair combat you would suffer my wrath!” the war god thundered his bloody gaze falling on the scrawny form of the man beside her. The flames from the god’s sword miraculously didn’t set the pillows on fire, but she could feel them burn where the blade touched her neck.

Her new boyfriend stared wide eyed at the shining terror standing at the foot of the bed.

She didn’t even bother pulling up the sheet and winked. “Our Scrabble matches are very combative.”

I actually feel kind of sorry for Ginny.

Drabble: Family

Ron let his sister stay there with her face against his shoulder and didn't push her away.

"It's just hard, you know?" she mumbled.  "He's in love with the family, not me."

His ears burned red, and he had no idea what to do, so he hugged her.

He held her until the shadows in the room changed direction.  "I have to get home," she hiccuped.

He let her go.  "Yuck, you got snot on my sleeve."

"What?  No I didn't!"

"Yes you did," he jabbed his finger at a trail of wet, "right there!"

Ginny cracked a wan grin.

Stop.  Don’t.

Ty Lee’s father’s feet were as light as hers, and when she was little, she watched him hesitate, and draw them down, and keep his steps even, but didn’t know why.

Stop.  Don’t.

Around her, her sisters followed his lead, and gazed at the sky with wistful smiles, and never left the ground, at least not where anyone could see.

Stop. Don’t.

Her mother always gave her father a puzzled look when he said that.

Stop.  Don’t.

But Ty Lee dreamed she could fly and woke up sure she could.  The air would never have let her fall.
