It’s my birth month, and to celebrate, I’m hosting a commentfic meme! I’m in the mood to write some AU fics, so that’s the theme of the meme. I’m open to both Avatar: the Last Airbender and Harry Potter requests, and I’m also taking requests in any of my existing AUs (Except Children of Mars), including the ones I established im my last commentfic meme, as well as new ones. “Listen, you little shit, if you pull that again, we’ll strangle you right here and tell your sister you died choking on the gag. You want that?”

Zuko shook his head and spat out another mouthful of bile. “No.”

He tugged against the bonds on his wrists and ankles. The fabric slid under them and snagged. His skin tore, and the blood made his movements easier, and just as ineffective as ever. His eyes darted up to the the shiny burn on the agent’s hand, and he almost vibrated with impotent fury. It was such a minor burn, like the man could have gotten by touching a pot that hadn’t been off the fire for long enough. It probably wouldn’t even scar. His fire hadn’t even made it all the way through the man’s robes. It was pathetic.

The burn probably hurt, though. He just had to keep reminding himself of that.

The other agent grabbed Zuko’s arms and drew him up to his feet. As the Dai Li agents dragged him down the corridor, his bound feet banged over the iron floor, echoing dully. He had to fight not to grit his teeth against the pain as his head bounced around on his neck. The pouch with Uncle’s ashes thumped against his hip, and he tried to reach out to it automatically, through the cloud threatening to engulf his mind. But his hands were cuffed, and he just felt stupid.

The Dai Li agent who he had burned pulled a ring of keys out of his robe and unlocked a heavy, metal cell door. The boy inside scrambled to his feet and tried to rush the door as the Dai Li threw Zuko inside. They crashed into each other Sokka grunted as he hit the ground, Zuko on top of his chest. The key turned in the lock again and the rocks around Zuko’s wrists and ankles flew off and out the door grille, back to the agents.

Zuko rolled off him and glanced around in the gloom, trying to take stock of where he was, but it hurt just to turn his head, and his brain wouldn’t work...

“Oh, hello.” The Earth King waved to him almost fanatically from a corner of the cell, his voice high and scared. “Nice to see you again.”

Zuko propped himself up against the wall and let his head sink to his knees. “Hey.” The word wasn’t really more than an indistinct grunt, and he didn’t know if anyone could hear it though his knees anyway. He didn’t care.

He had screwed up. He should have gone with his sister. If he hadn’t lost his temp-

It wasn’t like Aang, the Avatar’s, friends wanted him around anyway. It would have been better if he’d just gone with Azula.

“Hey, Zuko.” Sokka pulled himself up to his feet and shook himself off. “Did you see Katara? Aang and toph went to rescue her-”

Of course they went to rescue her. “She’s fine.” He closed his eyes. “Shut up.”

“What happened?” Sokka demanded, standing over him. “Where is she? Is she...”

“She got out, alright?” And they just left him there.

Sokka beamed.

“Are your friends going to get us out of here?” the Earth King asked, eying Zuko uncertainly. Zuko didn’t look up. He didn’t answer, because he had no idea what was going to come out if he opened his mouth.

“Of course they will!” Sokka assured him rapidly, cutting through the silence. “If we don’t break ourselves out first. So, Zuko, do you happen to have any wire on you?”

Zuko didn’t bother to answer.

The iron made everything around Toph feel rounded and larger than it was. The Dai Li loomed in front of her as she followed. When they turned a corner, and she felt Zuko hit the ground, she had to fight not to run, to let her feet hammer against the cold, hard metal.

Toph felt the metal cell door open and swing closed again, and she pressed herself against the wall, hoping she was in the shadows. People always talked about shadows. As the Dai Li agents walked past her, she held her breath, and when she couldn’t feel their footsteps ringing in the iron anymore, she let out a sigh of relief.

There were other people in that cell. Sokka!

Her hands found the cell door, and she planted her palms against it. It screeched as it crumpled under them. “You guys need some help? Or are you just waiting for something?”

“Toph!” Sokka leapt over to her and dragged her into a tight hug. “Where’d you learn to do that?”

“I am very glad to see you, Miss Bei Fong.” The Earth king rose to his feet. “But I’m not leaving without Bosco.”

Zuko groaned. Toph wriggled out of Sokka’s grasp and poked his shoulder. “You gonna get up anytime soon, lazy?”

He unfolded himself, and stood up, but after they all filed out of the cell, he braced himself on the threshold and stared down at the mangled door. Toph turned back to him. “What are you waiting for?”

“Nothing,” he mumbled, turning away.

They were only ever going to rescue him when he was with someone they actually wanted to rescue. Toph liked Sokka.

It would have been better if he had just left, if he had just gone home. Azula made it sound so easy, as if his father really wanted him.

“Come on,” she growled, grabbing his arm.

And Zuko followed.

And the fact that Zuko doesn't get to fight at all in CoD in this AU is a tremendous blow to his pride, ;)

Mai looked up when the little girl started talking and glanced at the rocks around her friend’s wrist. Only Ty Lee. She waved boredly. “Just take the...” She met Zuko’s eyes, and couldn’t say anything. “Bear.”

She swallowed, and watched him (them) go. Zuko turned to her before they left and opened his mouth, but he couldn’t say anything either.

Zuko stared, eyes wide and horrified. “How did he get out-”

“Why is he...” Suki turned her head, until she was looking at him completely sideways, but it still didn’t make sense.

Zuko shuddered. “We need to get Aang.”

“Oh spirits,” Sokka repeated.

“Uh, guys,” Toph tapped her foot against the dojo’s wooden floor. “What are we looking at?”

Is this going to be one of those universes that tries to take over my brain and make me write a novel? Oh yes, it is? Good to know. The universe title makes it sound like a bad romance novel.

A little bit about the Universe before I start... In this Universe, Ursa doesn’t come into Zuko’s room in time to hear Azula telling Zuko that Ozai’s going to kill him. Instead, Ozai, enraged that his father plans to give Zuko to Iroh in place of Lu Ten, forcing Ozai to fall behind his own son in the succession, tries to kill his son, and Ursa walks in on that. Ursa forces Ozai off their son and kills him, but Zuko’s mortally wounded. Returning home to find his brother dead, and his nephew lingering near death, Iroh snatches Zuko off his deathbed and slips away of the Fire Navy’s fastest ship to the Sun Warriors’ temple to bathe his nephew in the sacred eternal flames. Agni intervenes on Zuko’s behalf, and Zuko’s hair turns yellow-gold like sunlight, his eyes open, and he demands to know what’s going on. Because he’s Zuko. Agni leaves one trace of the attack on Zuko, a certain burn scar over his left eye. Meanwhile, Azulon has died from the shock of it all, and for a few months, everyone thought Azula was going to get the throne with Ursa as regent, so you can imagine just what she’s feeling when his royal tea-loving cookiness shows up with her suddenly perfectly healthy, if disturbingly blond, brother.

Iroh takes the throne, and immediately ends the war and starts disarmament. But as soon as the colonies are emptied, the ships are sunk, the tanks melted down, and the factories destroyed, the Earth Kingdom Army and the Northern Water Tribe mobilize to get their revenge for nearly a century of war and devastation. As her uncle tries to fight a losing war against two nations, Azula schemes to take the throne herself.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Water Tribe, Yue never was sick as a child. When her father lets her sit in on a war meeting, she’s stunned to hear her father wants to join the Earth Kingdom and send warriors out to attack the Fire Nation instead of maintaining the isolation that protected them during the first war, too stunned to remember her princessly decorum. Furious, Arnook betroths her at thirteen to one of the great warriors of the tribe, Pakku, hoping he’ll keep her in line. Pakku, sulking at being saddled with a child intended, helps Yue run away like Kanna did. Upon learning of this, Arnook exiles Pakku, and for good measure retroactively exiles his daughter. The two of them meet up, and fearful for the little girl he watched grow up, Pakku stays with her and eventually starts to teach her to waterbend. This is the world into which Aang wakes.

I may play around with drawing some stuff- Yue living is one of those 'wouldn't it be great if someone did something with it?' ideas that I just love to nom. I like to see if people can build off of what we were initially presented with, the image of 'dutiful moon-touched princess'.

That may very well be where I picked up the brainwaves for this, now that I think about it. It's not a visit to Kyoshi Island if someone doesn't end up cross-dressing.

Or perhaps there's a fine tradition of amateur theater in the army/navy officer's academy- "'In and out of petticoats all the time,'" to quote Monstrous Regiment.

I've spent most of my brain power on Yue figuring out what her life as a moon spirit is like, and how she adjusts to it. I don't write her as human that often, which is a shame.

The worst thing is, my brain keeps trying to convince me that the perfect format for this universe is the graphic novel. cannot draw well enough for that. Speaking of which, need to draw Yue from this verse, black haired and riding a wave. Fierce, tough Yue. She's way more sweet and pliant than Zuko, but Pakku's way more crotchety than Iroh, so it evens out.

The real reason Zuko hates music night. It always devolves into theater night, and since he's the youngest, he gets stuck playing the girls. And everybody makes fun of him, because he's Zuko, and he can't act.

Maybe try scripting out bits? Mixes of prose and comicy bits have been fun for me in the past.

Oh man, I love this idea. :D It has mamabear!Ursa, which I love, and protective!Iroh (and Fire Lord Iroh, for that matter)... XD Man, though, wouldn't that be a hilarible (hilarious and terrible) combination - Fire Lord Azula (at like, age eight) with Ursa as regent?

I also love the idea of Pakku going "hell no I won't be party to this!" and helping Yue. Also, Pakku and Yue in a parallel of Iroh and Zuko. AWESOME.

This meme was the worst idea ever, for me to do, given that I didn't need any new, big universes. Oh but it's such a cool thing.

Azula would spend a lot of time trying to dispose of her annoying regent, especially once she becomes the brilliant 14 year old who pwns everybody she meets. And then she would go a little crazy.

So do I! Pakku and Yue in Iroh and Zuko's roles might just be my favorite part of this AU.

Hm- maybe all that blond hair is embarrassing- especially if you're trying to hide amongst the commoners. So off with the lot, and maybe walnut juice to dye the stubble. I doubt anyone's going to sacrifice him to remove the sun- which is rather a more obviously necessary thing than the moon- but there's probably factions lining up to use him one way or another.

I don't want to mess with the design against your whim, but my image is starting to be black hair, but with his scarred eye a blank gold.
