Birthday AU Commentfic Meme!

It’s my birth month, and to celebrate, I’m hosting a commentfic meme!  I’m in the mood to write some AU fics, so that’s the theme of the meme.  I’m open to both Avatar: the Last Airbender and Harry Potter requests, and I’m also taking requests in any of my existing AUs (Except Children of Mars), including the ones I established im my last commentfic meme, as well as new ones.  Comment with up to five requests, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  weirdlet , beboots , and floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because beboots  and floranna  are the best betas ever, and weirdlet  has a truly bizarre AU I inflicted on her rattling around in her head.  Also, anyone who wants me to write anything from my AU of Sun Child needs to ask weirdlet  and floranna , because it’s theirs.

I’m still figuring out things like how Zuko feels about fighting his people since he threw in with the Gaang during CoD, so...




“Does it fit?”

Zuko pushed himself up to his feet and walked. The ankle bent when he put weight on it, and popped back when he lifted it again. The mechanist’s clever system of hinges and springs almost felt normal. If he could feel it past his stump, it might have. “Yeah.”

Teo beamed. “You going to try it out?”

Zuko nodded, and followed him up the improvised wooden ramp laid over the staircase up to the deck. The ship rolled beneath his feet, but the wooden foot moved with it, like his real foot did. Excitement rushed around his body. He wondered if he could run.

The sun glittered off the field of icebergs, and Zuko exhaled a thin jet of fire. He pulled his gloved hands inside his sleeves for just a second, before he punched the air. He lunged, and punched wit his other hand, and pivoted as he kicked, the wooden foot trailing fire. He could feel his bending run through the leg, like it did through his boots, and gloves, and he kicked again, out into the empty air over the frozen sea.

He turned to Teo and took a few more clumsy steps. “I can walk! I can-”

It was such a stupid thing to say.

But Teo smiled, even if it passed through a grimace before becoming a smile. “Great, I’ll tell Dad it works,” he said before rolling away.

Zuko turned back to the ocean and swept his wooden foot out in an arc of flame. They sailed closer and closer to the North Pole which each moment, and Zuko tried not to think about what it was going to be like when they got there, or what it was going to be like when they left. Sometimes it was easier just to forget that everybody else was getting ready to invade his home. It was so much easier just to stay out there on the ship’s deck and send streaks of fire into the air with his new wooden foot.

He had to show his uncle.

thank you thank you thank you. (I love it) Of course I want more. So how does it work when he runs or walks on uneven ground or when he climbs (do the toes bend?)or walk on sand. Or how bout when he lands a jump. (I cant shut the analytical side off can I). I cant wait to see Azula's face - she will swallow her teeth!! You are the best most thoughtful author. H

The toes don't bend, and since his knee's still intact, and the ankle has a full range of motion, the foot would land a jump rather normally. Also, because he wears his boot over the foot, it deals with sand just as badly as normal as feet in boots do.

I re-read it and very cool psychology aspect of things. Also how does it attach, what if it comes off in the Agni Kai. If I were Azula I would do everything I could to burn it or remove it somehow. How will he guard against that. Maybe he will invent some bending moves (AKA Iroh) that can be equally or more devastating when kneeling/seated or expand on his "breakdancing" moves. I have a friend who shoots archery and fences from a wheelchair - he is absolutely devastating. I love to see him kick somebody's ass who made the mistake of misjudging him - makes my day every time. Ive learned most from him as an archer , he is left handed and can show me things as I am left handed too. H

There's a big part of me that wants someone to set it on fire and then for Zuko to throw it at them. Which would be difficult, because it attaches with a leather cup and a system of laces that keep it from coming off quickly.

Does this friend of yours have any videos online? I'd love to see that.

not that I know of. I shot archery with him this weekend. He is always one of the ones who wins. Ive also shot archery with someone who was born with one arm. (I'm a terrible shot partially because of perceptual problems but I love it because of the action of loading and pulling my bow is calming to me. I can enjoy it without hitting a darn thing. but I am getting better. I actually hit a couple things this time.) He had an adapted leather cuff to hold the bow thgat he had to be laced into. He pulled the bowstring with his hand and is an amazing shot, much, much better than me- (his perceptions are obviously intact). There is another guy that gets in armor and kicks butt (literally) with a crutch (missing a leg) and is very successful at winning most of his bouts. So I will look up some of the links I know and let you know if I find anything you would like to see. SCA (who I reinact with) has pretty extensive services for those with a disability at most of our functions. They also have interpreters for people who are deaf. (I am trying to learn more sign language too - for my patients). Great bunch of people to hang out with. Talk to you later. H

I'd love to see that, and I never knew that about the SCA. SCA and I (or any reenactment groups, really) have never gotten along because I'm violently allergic to smoke and it triggers massive seizures in minute quantities. But I make jewelry for reenactments, and my brother used to be in it.

OOO I got another angle on the AT. Teo becomes a prosthetist & w/c mechanic to the veterans of the war and Zuko is his parter (and guinea pig). He & Teo need to bond (and get drunk together). How about stumbling around on a ship Zuko falls off & discovers you cant swim well with a wooden prostetic, Teo reels him in & they get drunk comparing notes come up with some really nutty AT ideas- I know too funny not dark enough for your tastes. HMM. hopw about ZUKO needs to help Teo come up with some ideas for braces for himself because he is having skin integrity problems from sitting too much. He needs to work but he cant sit in the same position for more than 3 hours. otherwise he has to spend lots of time out of his chair for pressure relief. H ;-D
