It’s my birth month, and to celebrate, I’m hosting a commentfic meme!  I’m in the mood to write some AU fics, so that’s the theme of the meme.  I’m open to both Avatar: the Last Airbender and Harry Potter requests, and I’m also taking requests in any of my existing AUs (Except Children of Mars), including the ones I established im my last commentfic meme, as well as new ones.  Comment with up to five requests, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet , [livejournal.com profile] beboots , and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because [livejournal.com profile] beboots  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  are the best betas ever, and [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  has a truly bizarre AU I inflicted on her rattling around in her head.  Also, anyone who wants me to write anything from my AU of Sun Child needs to ask [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna , because it’s theirs.

*Closed and Finished*

Given that this meme has spawned a fair few universes, sorting the fics by requester would be clunky, so instead, I'm sorting them by universe this time.

I bet!

They have a chart somewhere with who's turn is which. Which Zuko burns every time he tracks it down.

I thought so. (unwillingly asleep). And yes existing AU MEME sounds great. You just made the warped dork inside very happy (meant in the most complemetary fashion possible - of course). I'm so happy I found this type of fiction. I think I like strength in adversity and always the hope of light at end of tunnel. I never am interested in characters who have it easy. Fun part is Zuko thinks like that too-he probabally would agree. Dontcha think (except he would like someone else to actually experiance the pain). smirk . . . H
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Zuko: Why can't the character growth and triumphing through adversity, and strughe happen to someone else for once?

yeah I resemble that remark. my Dad would steal my freshly baked bread and eat everything but the crust. (and put the crust back in the pan) snort!! Umm where in the world am I going to find some Matzo Ball soup (I need some now)- not around here for sure. Road trip!! H.

You have a point, but the way you are describing the world makes me think of a dying world and not a world who's lifespirit has gone in hibernation (and in a way it is a bit more fitting with an ice age since Aang is sleeping in the ice)

But as I mentioned in my note for the story, Aang isn't the spirit of the earth, because of the elemental connection, he's the spirit of life. Therefore, freezing him wouldn't cool down the earth. I guess I could have had people and animals (and plants, wonder how that would work) would just fall asleep, but... I'm working on the assumption that Aang's not fully alive in the ice.

And as soon as Aang comes out of the ice, there will be a sudden rash of triplet conceptions.

Utter illogic thrown in there to make life harder for the characters for my twisted amusement? Plus, I have a feeling the Fire Nation, with all the heat and moisture is hard on man made stuff without an added rot.

The gangway groaned on its gears. Zuko sat on the futon in the middle of the storeroom the others had cleaned out for him and his uncle and listened to the engines die. The others were leaving the ship, even his uncle, but Zuko couldn’t. He had missed... He had missed being on a ship anyway.

His crutch lay across his knees, just waiting for him to use it again, to get up and hobble up to the deck and off the ship.

It was cold that far north, even in the summer, and the storage rooms were far away from the engines. Zuko curled around himself, gazing at the closed door.

~*~

The wheels rumbled over the iron floor, and bounced over the rows of rivets, holding the iron plates together. The sound echoed off the walls, cutting through the talking and laughing in the hall, moving closer to the storeroom door. Zuko flopped down on the futon and yanked the blanket up over his head, pretending to be asleep.

The door screeched open, setting Zuko’s teeth on edge. Before his stupid, traitorous mind caught up with everything else, the idea that he should have whoever forgot to oil the hinges flogged flashed across it. Then he remembered he wasn’t on his own ship anymore. He never thought he would miss it.

“Zuko,” his uncle called into the room. Zuko ignored him and stayed curled up on the futon. “Look who I found.”

Zuko kept his breathing slow and even, as he really was asleep. Or meditating. He couldn’t let the candles in the room flicker, or Uncle would know.

“I’ll just go,” the boy who had followed his uncle in said awkwardly. “You know, come back when he’s awake.”

“No.” Uncle lowered himself down onto the futon next to his nephew and put a hand on his shoulder. Zuko stiffened. “Stay.”

“No, really-” the boy insisted.

“Zuko,” Uncle said gently. “No one could sleep through that door opening.”

“Go away.” He couldn’t- He didn’t know how his uncle could stand staying with these people who were gathering together ti invade their home, to be friendly with them, and pretend it didn’t- Zuko had betrayed his country in every way that mattered. He was a traitor. He should be hunted down and killed for it.

“Uh,” The boy with the goggles let out miserably.

“Prince Zuko,” Uncle pulled the blanket down, off his nephew’s head. “Be polite.”

Zuko just felt trapped. Everything was closing in on him. Sitting up on the futon, he wrapped the blanket around his legs and glanced up sullenly at the boy who had followed his uncle in. Zuko’s good eye widened as he sank further back into the shadows. He recognized him, and it made him feel sick.

Uncle patted his nephew’s shoulder reassuringly. “I will leave you two alone.”

Zuko gritted his teeth and watched him go. “Hey.”

The boy with the goggles rolled closer to the futon. “I remember you,” he told him, at a loss. “You were wearing green and brown then, too.”
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
Zuko remembered the boy who had been so curious about the visitors to his home, especially Zuko, who by virtue of being only barely older than he was just so interesting. He remembered the boy’s strange father begging them to pretend to be Earth Kingdom so his people wouldn’t find out about his collaboration. He remembered staring at the temple murals and reliefs, desperate for any clue on his hopeless search. He remembered watching the temple’s new inhabitants fly through the air, and feeling a ridiculous, intoxicating rush of hope, and he remembered it dying when he saw three of the flying girls playing rock tag after they landed. But Zuko couldn’t remember the boy’s name. “Oh.”

“It’s, um, nice to see you again.” The kid kept trying to smile. It wasn’t quite working.

“Yeah.”

He glanced at the crutch resting against Zuko’s good leg. “Your uncle told me about what happened to your leg.”

Zuko wrapped his hand around the handle of the crutch. “What about it?”

The kid leaned his elbow on the arm of his wheelchair. “My dad could help, I think, I mean, he’s really good with things like that.”

Zuko hated the crutch. “I don’t need any help.”

“Oh.” The kid looked down. “Okay then.”

The kid was the same age Zuko had been when he had gone to the Northern Air Temple, Zuko realized with a jolt. “What’s your name?”

“Teo.” He laced his fingers behind his head. “You’re uncle’s worried about you.”

“He doesn’t have to be,” Zuko said sulkily. “I’m fine.” Fine as he was going to get.

“Come up on deck with me.” Teo’s lips pinched together. “It’ll make your uncle feel better.”

Zuko closed his eyes and nodded.

Life Spirit: Winter When He Goes

Katara left her Gran Gran’s tent when the moon rose, pulling the sleeves of her parka low over her hands. Hama stood on top of the low ice wall around the camp, sending icicle after icicle at a leather target, waiting for her student, and Katara swallowed. Gran Gran told her stories about how when she came to the South Pole, there had been tons of students, and tons of waterbenders to teach them. Katara wished that was still the way things were. She hated being Hama’s last hope.

She shuffled her way up the steps to the top of the wall. Hama folded her arms and let the icicles she had thrown into the target melt. “Why do you insist on climbing the stairs?” she grumbled at her student. “Boost yourself up on the ice like a proper bender.”

Katara climbed the rest of the way up the steps. She couldn’t wait for winter.

Winter was supposed to be the worst time of the year, when there was no sun, and the winds howled around, and no one could leave their tents long enough to hunt, or learn to bend, but winter was when their dad was home.

He had to go farther and farther away from the tribe every year to find food, and it took longer for him to come home. Someday, he might not come home at all.

And then winter would be the worst time of year.

Except even then, at least she wouldn’t have to deal with Hama.

"Peng", by the way, means both "fluffy" and "clump" in Chinese. And “Leishang” means “lightning”, because I have a morbid sense of humor.

The Earth king hopped out of the saddle and slid down the bison’s leg, holding his glasses against the bridge of his nose, grinning wildly. “Did you have a nice flight in?” Zuko asked mildly.

Kuei nodded. “The city looks small from the air, different from Ba Sing Se.”

Next to him, Mai glanced up at the sky. Kuei probably had no idea how that sounded. Leishang tugged against her parents’ hands, trying to break free to pet the sky bison, but Zuko and Mai held tight.

Kuei’s guards followed him out of the saddle more sedately, and the Earth King gazed back at his bear and the bison’s driver. “Do you have somewhere Bosco can stay while I’m here?” he asked breathlessly.

“It’s alright, I’ll take care of Bosco,” Ty Lee called from the saddle. “Peng thinks he’s funny.”

Zuko remembered how little Peng and his siblings had been when Ty Lee had picked him. He wasn’t little anymore. Aang said Appa was on, um, her third litter, and Zuko wondered where she kept finding dads.

Leishang dragged harder on her arms, but her mom and dad still didn’t let go. Kuei smiled at her and crouched down. “What’s your name?”

She twisted from side to side the way children did when they were shy, and buried her face in her dad’s robe, grinning.

“Leishang,” Zuko answered for her, swinging her up into his arms. “Our oldest.”

“‘m not supposed to talk to strangers,” Leishang told Earth King repressively, shaking her finger at him.”

Mai glanced up at the sky again and pulled her daughter’s bangs out from behind her ears. “That’s only when we’re not right here with you.”

Leishang jutted out her jaw, and pushed her bangs back behind her ears.

Kuei stuck out his tongue and scrunched up his eyes, and Leishang grabbed his nose.

Kuei never seemed older than Zuko. He had to be by ten years, or more, but he just never seemed it.

When the spasm hit, Zuko shoved his daughter into Mai’s hands before he fell to his knees. Every time, he was afraid he was going to drop her.

Kuei leapt backwards. “Are you alright? Somebody do something!”

“I’m okay!” Zuko waved him away and scrambled to his feet. “That just happens sometimes.” He shook the dust off his robes and held his head up. “So you wanted to talk about the Pohuai Stronghold.”

Kuei couldn’t stop staring.

Poor Katara- being a bender was such a source of pride for her, even if it was hard work. An unpleasant teacher can really suck the joy out of things.

By which I mean Katara! Katara will have a hard time teaching Aang!

By the way, you have two more requests.
From: [identity profile] attackfish.livejournal.com
The ship crunched through the ice. The ice wall around the pathetic little camp collapsed in on the ship and into the camp. The gangplank sank down onto the snow, and Zuko marched down, in front of his soldiers, swinging his cane. When he tapped it down against the ice, it sank into the snow.

As one of the villagers charged for him with a yell, Zuko’s guards punted him into the snow. Zuko listened to his grunts and squeals as he dug himself out of the snow.

The guard who had knocked the Water Tribe boy into the snow bent down to whisper into Zuko’s ear. “It doesn’t look like he’s here.”

Zuko’s eyelids narrowed over his glass eyes. “Where are you hiding him?” No one answered. Fury knotted itself in Zuko’s chest. He yelled, fist punching the air. Fire rolled out of it, but no one made a sound. “I know you're hiding the Avatar!”

The Water Tribe boy came for him again, and Zuko twisted out of the way as the wind whistled past his ears. He grabbed out, but the boy rolled out of his reach and jerked the cane out of his hands.

All of a sudden, Zuko was cut adrift. His hand closed on the empty air, and even though he didn’t know any less about where he was then he had a moment before, his head jerked from side to side, as if he was still trying to see.

“Not so tough without your weapon,” the boy twittered. Zuko could hear the cane hit his palm, and whip back up into the air and hit the boy’s palm again. “What is this thing anyway? What’re you supposed to do with it?”

“Give that back!” Zuko cried indignantly, grabbing for where he thought it was. But there was a snowdrift in the way. He fell hard against the ice on his hands and knees. The ice burned against his bare skin, and Zuko pushed himself up to breathe hot air onto them.

A crack and crunch sounded hollowly on the frozen air. Zuko’s face crumpled. “No...”

“What is this thing?” the Tribesman asked curiously.

Zuko turned towards his voice.

A moment later, the Water Tribe boy talked from off to the side of Zuko’s head. “Wait a second, are you blind?”

Zuko’s hands balled into fists. He waved his soldiers forward, grabbing onto the gangway. “I’m blind,” he growled, shaking with rage. “But my crew isn’t.”

Ooh... I really liked this! I mean, I feel bad for Katara, but I find this whole situation quite interesting... I have to wonder what Katara's bending would have turned out to be like if Hama had been her teacher for her entire life. Much darker, I presume, and more violent. D:

Well done!

Lol lol lol Appa and litters of little Appas... XD

"Kuei never seemed older than Zuko. He had to be by ten years, or more, but he just never seemed it." Aww... Kuei is just adorkable. :3 Also, his genuine concern for Zuko's well-being is cute. :)

And hey, I'm glad that Zuko in this AU seems to be holding up! ;) At least he has kids of a certain age, now.

Thank you for writing this! :)

Katara's bending in this verse is going to give Aang the willies in a big way. Katara in this verse has learned to have a sort of deeply unhealthy love hate relationship with her bending, thanks to Hama.

Zuko's like "you will ignore that fall, or I will make you."
