It’s my birth month, and to celebrate, I’m hosting a commentfic meme!  I’m in the mood to write some AU fics, so that’s the theme of the meme.  I’m open to both Avatar: the Last Airbender and Harry Potter requests, and I’m also taking requests in any of my existing AUs (Except Children of Mars), including the ones I established im my last commentfic meme, as well as new ones.  Comment with up to five requests, and I’ll guarantee you at least one commentfic.  I’ll probably answer with more, knowing me.  [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet , [livejournal.com profile] beboots , and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  get seven requests and a guarantee of two fics, because [livejournal.com profile] beboots  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna  are the best betas ever, and [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  has a truly bizarre AU I inflicted on her rattling around in her head.  Also, anyone who wants me to write anything from my AU of Sun Child needs to ask [livejournal.com profile] weirdlet  and [livejournal.com profile] floranna , because it’s theirs.

*Closed and Finished*

Given that this meme has spawned a fair few universes, sorting the fics by requester would be clunky, so instead, I'm sorting them by universe this time.

Hmm... I'm quite enjoying this alternate universe! So biological things are slowly dying?

(Iroh with NO TEA = most tragic thing about this fic. ;) )

I think that it makes sense for certain manufactured goods - stuff that requires, y'know, INDUSTRY and thus a surplus of labour - like metal would be in high demand in this world.

I really liked this pair of lines: "People wondered out loud what kind of person would throw away a miracle, what was wrong with him. /Or wrong with the child." It makes sense that actual SIBLINGS would be a bit of a miracle, if fertility has gone down so much...

I like this Zuko, too. I get the impression he's like "yeah, sure, uncle, mm-hmm, of course you used to boil leaves for something that tasted good but had no purpose." XD

Zuko's motivations in all of this are MUCH more noble! ;)

Iroh with no tea... it's like the apocaly-, oh yeah, that's right...

Oh no, he's really just as desperate as ever, it's just this time his desperate self interest is more in line with everybody else's.

I like this dark world...
Question: did you have any inspiration for it? (I think i personally would have gone a bit more fimbulvinter on the Avatar world)

2:nd question: why is iron/steel items rare in Fire nation?

I briefly contemplated making the world go into an ice age, but during ice ages, certain areas of the world become much more fertile, for example, equatorial deserts, and having grown up in Florida, I have a feeling a cool off would have made a lot of people in the Fire Nation very happy. It wouldn't really have made civilization disintegrate the way plants just not growing and animals including people just not being born.

All manufacture is rare all over the whole world. Since almost all time is spent trying to obtain food, no one has time to learn metallurgy, or weaving, or what have you. The manufactured goods that remain are remnants of the time before Aang was frozen, or the years just after, when it wasn't as bad yet.

It might be nice the first years but then you realize that your fruit trees has stopped blooming and there is this stream of climate refugees coming to your land from the south and the north. (Now I se a propaganda poster of a Water tribesman proclaiming something like "Illegal emigrants - here for your land and your women!")

Even if most of the manufacture knowledge is gone [side adventure: 'Zuko and the quest after the riddle of steel'] there should be a loot of hand-me-down weapon and gear from Sozin's time

Actually, the Si Wong desert would suddenly be arable as the Sahara was during the big ice ages, and a whole big chunk of the Earth Kingdom would suddenly be able to support a bigger population. An ice age would be a mixed bag.

That's why Ozai has a certain amount of power left in this world. He controls the biggest source of hand-me-down loot. Also, manufactured goods don't last as long as they should. Everything's going to rot.

The lowering of the temperature dos not make land more fertile it would just change the Si Wong desert to something similar to the Gobi Desert instead of the Sahara.

So it is not just a lose of life force across the world it is also a "rot" field

During ice ages, rain fall pattern shift as wind and current patterns change as more ocean water is locked in ice. The Sahara, and much of the modern Middle East became extremely lush during the big ice ages, as did other warm deserts, according to all of the paleontological and archaeological evidence we have I live in a cold desert. I know that a change in temperature doesn't make a desert more fertile. Also, ice ages disproportionately affect the temperatures of the world. The closer to the poles, the more extreme the change. Towards the equator, other factors, such as the changed water and wind circulation patterns have a much larger effect. So in the Fire Nation, the change in temperature would have been much less noticeable.

That is probably true but you are thinking of a natural ice age what I am thinking of is a supernatural ice age, the temperature dropping 30-40 or more degrees in one hundred years. Nature don't have the time to adept itself in that time and a loot of plants and animals will die because of the cold, people will flee there ancestors land since it can no longer support them and there cloths can no longer protect them from the cold. They will move to warmer land were they will try to make living and if somebody is already living there they will try to take it from them

True. But I think there's something poetic about, if Aang's a life spirit, there just not being as much life around. The cold would be if say, Agni went to sleep.

You have a point, but the way you are describing the world makes me think of a dying world and not a world who's lifespirit has gone in hibernation (and in a way it is a bit more fitting with an ice age since Aang is sleeping in the ice)

But as I mentioned in my note for the story, Aang isn't the spirit of the earth, because of the elemental connection, he's the spirit of life. Therefore, freezing him wouldn't cool down the earth. I guess I could have had people and animals (and plants, wonder how that would work) would just fall asleep, but... I'm working on the assumption that Aang's not fully alive in the ice.

And as soon as Aang comes out of the ice, there will be a sudden rash of triplet conceptions.

Okay, but why the "rot" field that destroy all the metal and other manufactured things?

Utter illogic thrown in there to make life harder for the characters for my twisted amusement? Plus, I have a feeling the Fire Nation, with all the heat and moisture is hard on man made stuff without an added rot.

And it's not just manufactured goods that fall apart faster. Everything does, skins, wood, entropy is overactive in this universe.
